Literary agent's bio says Obama was born in Kenya

If you want to believe that Barack Obama told the truth about exactly where he was born and how his childhood unfolded to the New York Times, the Philadelphia Inquirer, The Boston Globe, The Chicago Tribune, the Miami Herald and Ebony magazine -- among others -- along with telling the truth about exactly where he was born and how his childhood unfolded in his own book, but lied about it for the purposes of a blurb to be shown to book publishers -- even though authors don't write those blurbs themselves, and someone at the agency has already taken responsibility for the error, you're crazy.

Full stop.

Did we ever see this book? It was never written, right? So how do we know what was "in" it?

The bottom line is that you are responsible for your own bio, no matter where it appears. He was born in Hawaii. That's fact.

But, this bio was written on his behalf, in an attempt to sell his book. Whether he supplied the info, or they made it up, it's still his responsibility to make sure they got it right.

There's no current relevance to this story, but it's funny to me that people refuse to just admit that he bears a responsibility for his own bio.

 

I think that the question is more one of intent. He is responsible for his own bio, yes. But that does not automatically lead to a conclusion that he willfully manipulated it. That's a separate inquiry.

Lesser-known authors (which is definitely what Obama was in 1991) almost always either write their own bio or just tell someone the information that is included on the back of the book or whatever...

How is someone in 1991 going to write a bio blurb on Obama without his input?

As YF said, he was born in Hawaii... But it does seem very, very convenient that someone made a "fact-checking error" in 1991 about Obama. How would you fact-check anything on a guy who was just out of law school?

Those bios are almost always written by the writers themselves.

I don't know what Obama's motivation would have been to lie. I don't know that he did lie. I just laugh at the notion of this being a "fact-checking error" when the only way to fact-check an unknown author's bio would be to call the author himself.
