Interesting that the layoffs story is behind the paywall.

I have a subscription through my employer. Isn't essentially everything behind a paywall for nonsubscribers who have read a certain number of stories in a month?

Soon-Shiong expressed deep frustration with past leadership and attempts to build the Los Angeles Times Studios to take the paper’s journalism to more consumers through documentaries and podcasts.

The owner said he recognized several months ago that former Executive Editor Kevin Merida, who stepped down earlier this month, and several high-ranking editors that he put in place were not getting the job done.

What are the newspaper success stories in taking their journalism to more consumers through documentaries and podcasts?

No paywall for me on the LAT story.

And they are one of the few places that actually mention their layoffs. No place I've worked (Tribune, McClatchy) dared do so.

That they still had a newsroom of 500ish surprises me.

The NYT, I'd guess. And "documentaries," a poorly chosen word, really means, you know, visual storytelling. A 7-minute video.

Isn't The New York Times and the others in the "Big 3" (The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post) in a different class than everyone else?

At least one loss in sports ... and a big one.
