At one point in my career I very badly wanted to live in or right near Moscow, Idaho

You motherfuckers. Talking about Moscow trips and Paris vacations, and I’m sitting here in a hotel in the city where I live instead of going on our anniversary trip to Montreal because my wife can’t fly. We did eat well, though, and got two nights away from the kids.

Yes, about 10-15 years ago on a "volunteer vacation" service trip to Yaroslav. Extended a couple days to see Moscow.

I have absolutely no idea who CK Louis is, though.

I went to both Moscow and St. Petersburg in 2002. Great trip, even though it was December, and freezing.

    The history is incredible.

Moscow was tense, as the Chechen movie theater attack had happened recently.

St. Petersburg is beautiful, and felt much more like Western Europe.

How did you get there from your home in Vladivostok?

The domestic flight was actually pretty interesting.

Not a lot of folks in Russia spoke English. Found the airline ticket office in Moscow well enough, and bought my ticket.

But, I guess I got to the airport too early, and they wouldn’t let me through security right away, which I didn’t understand.

They also didn’t much appreciate it when I didn’t walk straight to the plane, but ran across the tarmac a bit to get a good picture of the plane. (As an airline employee at the time, this was a requirement.)

I was in Moscow and then-Leningrad in 1991, two months before communism fell. Underrated country for beauty. YF is right about St. Petersburg. Moscow feels the way you would expect Moscow to feel.

In what argument was Wyatt Oop handing you your ass when you took this “trip?”

It could have been somebody else. He's just particularly cowardly when it comes to me. :)

(Of course, I'm kidding. I'm not even sure the board existed yet in 2002.)

Lots of time in the Moscow airport waiting for connecting flights. Very cold, even in the summer.
