They are living in a war zone, after all.

Exactly. It is absolutely fair to call into question what this school is doing.

Not anti-Christian at all. It's stupid to think of it that way.

As a fundamentalist Christian, this disturbs me. Government schools shouldn't be promoting religion any more than they should be promoting secular humanism. Just stick to reading, writing and arithmetic (and grossly overpromoted and overfunded sports programs), please.

Curious as to what you define as Secular Humanism? Does this include Evolution?

I'll put it out there, up-front, that I'm Christian, and frankly, I think schools could probably do with a little more Christian influence these days. I'm not convinced it would hurt anybody. Or even that it actually would hurt anybody's feelings, really.

This has all just become about political correctness -- from both sides.

I'm also not at all convinced that this thread would have appeared if the teacher was leading, say, instruction or prayer or other enlightenment about any other religion. In that case, it would probably just be considered teaching, and trying to expose students to other views, and foster understanding, and such.

It's all just political correctness, to practically everybody who jumps and complains any time anything even vaguely religious is broached -- the same ridiculousness that occurs over "under God" being in the pledge of allegiance.

Well, if it includes evolution, it's called education. No pictures of saddles on dinosaur

It's one thing to teach Christianity as in "Here's what they believe, here's the history behind it, here's why they believe it", etc. and do the same with other religions.

It's another thing to say "Alright everyone, it's time to pray to OUR God and if you don't, at best we'll look at you as a weirdo, and at worst, we'll ostracize you until you go somewhere else!"

A "Comparative Religion' course teaches history and theology about Christianity, Islam , Judaism, Zen Buddhism and oh, hell, Zoroastrianism. If the teacher isn't a Bible thumper, then no one religion is taught to be the 'right one' and there are no prayers--in any of the religions.

And please, it has nothing to do with "political correctness", a hack term at best.

Exactly, but WriteThinking just wanted to whine about the poor Christian Americans being put down again.

As previously noted, I teach in a public high school. Our school has a very strong chapter of FCA. We have a coaches prayer group every Thursday morning before school; no students, just teachers. Our baseball coach's favorite saying is "We need to give 'em a good Dose of the Ghost." One of my school's most popular electives is Bible History. I don't teach it, nor do I really know how it is taught. All I know is both semesters fill up quickly. Our students line up to get registered for it.

No one has ever complained. It works for our community.
