    That's always been a problem.

True story: Connecticut's constitution did not guarantee freedom of religion to non-Christians until 1965. Until 1818, the state was a de facto theocracy, governed by the Congregationalist church, which dictated legislation to the Federalists. This did not sit well with the Methodists, Baptists, and Episcopalians, all of whom were required by law to register a declaration of dissent with the state in order to worship until the 1818 Constitution guaranteed religious freedom to all Christian denominations. As for the Founding Fathers, Jay and Adams were devout while Jefferson abhorred religious establishment (but was a distinct minority). In one of Adams' letters or journal entries during one of the conventions, he makes a note of how appalled he was at what he perceived as an attack on religion that Jefferson made during a speech to the convention (of course, nobody took notes, so who knows what he actually said). But as has been acknowledged, none of that really matters. Few of these guys had ever seen an Asian or met anybody outside of judeo-christianity. If you weren't a Christian of some sort, you were a non-believer. Which is why it's impossible to apply much of their philosophy to modern-day situations.

And let's keep in mind that the majority of these guys believed in limited white male suffrage. The liberals were the ones who thought all white males should be able to vote. Darwin's parents were still in elementary school in 1776. All respect in the world to the Founding Fathers, but the majority of them were racist, classist, religious fundamentalists, and if we're really still trying to make the decisions that they would make, then the states rights folks win the debate.

Sure, there was a problem that nearly ended in violence. Today, lawsuits, and the fear of them, prevent most of those occurences. And the ones that do happen usually end up in, you guessed it, lawsuits too.

You're saying it would have been better for teachers to hit students, and for parents to hit teachers?

It would be better for people to come to terms rather getting courts and lawyers involved just because the sun came up. If someone gets out of line, call them on their bullshit. I have a similar story where a teacher threatened to throw hot coffee in my mom's face. My grandmother walk to the school, which was about a quarter mile from the house, and suggested if she wanted to throw coffee in someone's face, throw it in hers. That was the end of the situation.

So let's say the grandmother doesn't go to the school. The teacher thinks she is home free and throws coffee in the girl's face and burns it. She should get away with it?

No, it never gets to that because people don't run crying to the courts and school boards because someone offended their baby. Bullies are called on their bullshit, and that's the end of it.

    This is getting off topic.

So what if the teacher *does* throw the coffee in the parent's face?

Or rather, the thought doesn't even cross the teacher's mind to throw coffee in anyone's face, because she'll get sued to homelessness if she does.

Or, she knows doing so to an adult will cause her to get the ever loving shit kicked out of her.
