SF Express is the voice of journalism reason on this board and always has been.

I don't think anybody else is even close.

I don't know about Joe as president, but he'd make a helluva majority whip.

Ah, Mizzou, thanks, but to be honest, Frank knows way more about the ins and outs of this business than I do and would probably make a hell of a publisher (hope that's not an insult, Frank). And a lot of other smart, experienced people here, too. I kind of like JW's take.

Screw the APSE web site hits. You'd welcome ideas ... there were a couple of great posts on the first page of this thread with great ideas, including some kind of support system for sports writers who get caught up in the layoffs and buyouts. Did you read them? Doesn't seem to me that baby steps are needed for APSE to start helping guys in that regard. If you're as good a leader as some people have testified to on this thread, you can get it done. The hell with the contest. Let's do something meaningful for this profession, by the organization that supposedly speaks for it.

My shop is in the middle of buyouts/layoffs, and every time the phone rings with an unfamiliar number, I'm worried it's someone from the office calling to tell me I'm fired.
How the hell am I supposed to keep my passion alive when I'm scared whenever I answer the damn phone?

I don't think they'd call to tell you that you're fired. They'd be afraid that you'd get mad and start throwing expensive equipment around the room.

They generally come with your boss and someone from HR and maybe security.

If that makes you feel any better.

Frank Reich and the Bills did it once ...

So, who's going to lead. People can talk about leading to make change. Few do.

and fewer are in position to do so. hoppes already has the position, he's got a platform and he's got his talking points.
