I rewatched it tonight with HC who couldn't stay up last night because of an early film shoot this morning.

She pointed out that the woman in the fur ad poster in the store where Roger was buying the coat for Joan was Betty.

We rewound and yes, it was. I remember back in the first season that one of them mentioned that's how they met.

    Nice grab, HC

Don didn't pick up the waitress, Dick did.

That's certainly how it seemed from the look on Don's face as the elevator closed.

I believe Roger said Joan was going because there would be potential clients at the awards.

Consensus at my work is yes, Don pulled a fast one over on Sterling.

What a big episode. The awards. Ken coming back. The great Life presentation. The LBJ ad that didn't air. Peggy. Roger. Joan.

And I did notice that the waitress referred to Draper as "Dick" when they woke on Sunday.

So many good lines "Let's get out of here - they're going to start serving lunch soon."

Pete had points to make, and he made them. Being on board at the outset of the new incarnation, he had no desire to deal with Ken as an equal.
So he played poker with Ken, saying pretty much, "Would be fine to have you here, but I rank higher than you" . . . and Ken bought it. Just another example of Pete being very adept at power-play infighting. And Lane can
like it or lump it. Pete's a partner, for heaven's sake.

Pete was totally within his rights to be pissed off at Lane for not consulting him with Ken's hire

I also think he handled Ken exactly right. Ken may turn out to be a great hire but he's still just an employee and yes, Pete is a partner. Big difference. That little meeting made things perfectly clear so as to avoid any conflict down the road: Ken works for Pete.

And the way Pete put his hands behind his head, leaned back and said, "How are the wedding plans going?" was priceless.

Loved that, too. Pete did everything but say, "Polish my helmet".

It does sadden me that despite the sustained whispers of hope, continue
to believe this is going to be five seasons and out, since the Draper
career arc/parabola is so clearcut. He's heading towards the ground
on a jet with no live engines and scant hope for recovery. When he
decides to "forget" about an appointment to be with his kids because
    he's humping some third-tier waitress while in a drunken stupor . . .
    doesn't bode well.
Maybe we'll get six out of it (as we did for the Sopranos), and I hope so, too, but not holding my breath. Would love to be wrong.

I still think Peggy is the best character on the show.

Sunday's episode underscored that for me again.

The stable of writers is overwhelmingly female. Ain't no surprise.

  11. The thing about Pete that just kills me is every time I'm thisclose to start pulling for him, he goes douche on you. I thought he played Ken _ who I've never really liked _ perfectly. It was Pete's "fuck it, I can do this just like Draper" moment and then he had to put his hands behind his head.

Fantastic episode, though you can see Don getting close to the "holy cow, Peggy is surpassing me, I've got to rein her in a bit" moment. I can see her really blowing up at her in the next episode or two and things taking a particularly ugly turn after that.

And I think Don pulled one over on Roger. I think when Roger told him "welcome aboard" it was probably when they drunkenly hopped into that cab after getting hammered during the "interview" and Don took it and ran with it.

Also thought it was weird how they tried to make Slattery look "younger." He actually looked older than he does now. Must be the booze.

My favourite Peggy moment in that episode wasn't the hotel scene but when she confronts Don in his apartment about the Vicks tag line. She looks at him and says, "Fix it"-- as if Don works for her.

Other great moment after the awards presentation when Joan and Roger are sitting at the bar. Roger of course is pounding back the martinis and says something at which point Joan takes the glass, puts it down and says (paraphrase), "You've crossed the line from being lubricated to being morose". She then picks up her purse and leaves.

Joan (as we saw early on when she was temporarily running the TV side) could do anybody's job in that place and probably do it better than any of 'em. She's usually the smartest person in the room
