Lambert doesn't seem to grasp the way the show has already dealt with the way Joan is viewed around the office and the way she views herself and her own self-imposed glass ceiling. Remember the episode where Harry had her consulting on TV stuff and it was clear she was way better at Harry's job than Harry? She secretly harbored a desire to rise above the level of Super Secretary, but couldn't begin to figure out how to get from Point A to Point B. That's one of the biggest differences between Joan and Peggy, both in how they view themselves and in how the office views them. It's what made for some great tension between the two of them in earlier seasons before they became friends. Joan has evolved with the times in many respects, but not as radically as Peggy, who is much more comfortable challenging modern conventions.

The women on this show are certainly written well, but each of them also represents a certain archetype, from Betty to Peggy to Joan to Megan.

Joan would kill the Cool-Whip pitch. She'd also never thrust herself into the pitch and no one, certainly not Don, would be able to step outside their norms and think she'd be great for it because she hasn't pushed to be viewed that way by them. She's taken solace in the fact that she's the best office manager there is, and even in that she's had her doubts.

All due respect to the fine people at Grantland, but the Mad Men analysis there is not what I'd call a strength of the site.

"Kill it" good or "kill it" bad?

I wonder how much "Tomorrow Never Knows" cost compared to "Satisfaction," which they used a couple seasons ago.

Yeah, I wonder how that got by everybody ...

Probably quite a bit more. The Rolling Stones are whores. They license their stuff for everything.

Yeah, good point. The Beatles do a good job of creating some scarcity there. So does Nirvana. Remember how jarring it was to hear "Senseless Apprentice" in an episode of "LOST"?

I think it was really important that they were able to work a Beatles song into the show at some point, and probably worth every penny of the price for authenticity. How do you do a show set in the '60s and not, at some point, have the Beatles heard in some way, shape, or form? We've now heard the Stones, the Beach Boys, and the Beatles. They were going to a Dylan concert a few seasons ago, but not sure we've heard any of his songs yet.

Or Led Zeppelin's "Misty Mountain Hop" and "That's the Way" in Almost Famous.

    That's right.

On an utter tangent, my appreciate for Zeppelin has grown in the last few months. Mostly because I've really gotten into the Black Keys, and can hear Zeppelin's fingerprints all over their stuff.

    Carry on.

Yeah, I knew I knew her, but I just couldn't quite place where it was from. And I really liked Rory Gilmore. You just never thought of her as being on the cusp of middle-age.
