I never felt that way about Soprano. In the 1st season Melfi probed Tony to see if his anxiety was caused by the fact he was doing bad things but didn't really want. That wasn't Tony, he was a cold sociopath. The only worse people on that show were his mother and his wife. Tony never grew, Don seems to be able to grow, not completely, but he has. He has a conscience. Pete is a much more self absorbed. Roger has self awareness, more than any character on the show.

Liking Don is much more justified, granted.

But Tony was what he was -- which was a sociopath, yes. But with his mother, did he have chance? Did he have a choice?

Don can and has grown, and he's not a character like Tony Soprano.

The Fiddler line was just fantastic.

I think that Roger is coming to some sort of epiphany and i have this feeling that he might take his own life.

I don't know. This season, Roger has exhibited some self-awareness for the first time. It has to mean something and when combined with possible upcoming money issues, I would not be surprised

As a storyteller, though, what fate punishes Roger more? Dying, or being forced to continue living a life he finds soulless and empty?

I feel like everyone who insists the opening credit sequence is a clue to how the death of a major character will occur sure does like their allusions to be a bit too on the nose. It's a metaphor, not a clue.

At least I hope. It would really clunky otherwise.

As someone else who is late to the party and also in season three (have five episodes left there), I think Don is a terrible human being who is also one of the coolest cats on earth.

After the first season I was wondering if there was a single likable character on the show. I feel that's eased a bit to where some of them are at least tolerable but there is still a haze of uncertainty in that regard. I think it's one thing that makes the show tick.

I'm another newbie to the show as well ... watched the first 4 seasons on DVD in February/March, just in time to catch the start of season 5.

I can't think of a single main character you didn't loathe one episode and then root for the next episode. Part of what makes this show so great ... life isn't cut and dry as good/bad. We all have our admirable qualities and we all have our shortcomings.

"Try standing by the jukebox. That looked pretty on you before."

Man, I wish Matt Weiner could have written lines for me in my 20s. And that I looked like John Hamm, of course.

It is a good thing Don and Joan have absolutely zero sexual chemistry. Holy crap.

Great scenes with Jon Hamm tonight. All of them. Interesting to see where his character is after this episode compared to previous eps this season.

And someone hide Pete's shotgun from Lane!

Oooo, yeah. I thought I saw that coming ... and then I didn't ... and now I'm not so sure.
