You'll have to go back to pages 27 and 28 I think where we discuss that. The kiss symbolized a lot of things. It was a concoction of emotions, none of them passion, which might be what jarred or confused you about it. He just lost one of his best workers to a hated rival and there wasn't a damn thing he could do about it. He was filled with regret at that notion, but also because he lost a great person who busted her ass to get where she was going. In the back of his mind, he knew how Joan had just got to her spot - he knew Peggy wasn't like that.

    Anyway, tonight...

I knew Lane was hanging there. We all knew he was. Yet when they closed that door and his dead body swung around, I was completely fucking shocked. That scene was shot and acted to perfection. Hamm, Slattery and Kartheiser were incredible.

Also, just not Jared Harris' year for TV. First he's killed off on Fringe, now Mad Men. What's a man gotta do to get some new work?

I came to this thread to ask the question, "Which executive of the show is Glen's father?"

Thanks for the answer before the question.

Just an absolutely horrible child actor. Even drags Kiernan down with him.

So did people love all the Catcher in the Rye references?

Brilliant hour of television. In the literal meaning, not the British slang meaning.

    Lane's suicide note was boilerplate.

Here's the transcript of an interview Weiner did with NPR's Fresh Air in March. I don't think this is what I was originally referring to when I said that Weiner said Glen wasn't creepy, so I'll keep looking.

    http://m.npr.org/news/front/149161109?singlePage=true

    Highlights:
On why his son was cast as Glen: "He was cast because he was the best person available for the role. I would have never thought of him if he wasn't my son."

On Glen not being creepy: Whether the public wants to separate him or not is going to be his problem, but he can. I feel like he's not creepy. I feel like this is an admission of childhood, you know, unpleasant realities of the experience of childhood, which is that children are sexual, children are obsessive.

Staying away from spoilers on the other plot line, the entire Sally Draper-Glen plotline was an homage to Catcher in the Rye.

Glen takes the train into Manhattan from prep school -- where he's having a rough time of it -- just like Holden.

Sally calls Betty a phony, just like Holden would have.

Sally and Glen go to the Museum of Natural History, where Holden met Phoebe in the book.

Glen's dialogue at the Museum is pure Holden.

And, finally, Glen's dialogue at the end with Don is pure Holden, once again, making everyone uncomfortable because he's the only one who's saying what's on his mind -- and the true, uncomfortable things -- which is how Holden viewed himself, if not how he actually was.

I am pretty sure I have seen Weiner reference Catcher as one of the first books he ever read and part of his inspiration for setting the series when and where he did.

Well done, Zeke. It seemed obvious as I was watching it, but admittedly I saw you mention it prior to the ep one Teh Twitterz. Sepinwall had a great review this week, but missed that entirely. VanDerWerf too.

I was shocked Sepinwall didn't mention it. But I really do think his workload -- I know he was trying to recap GoT, Girls and Mad Men all last night -- is catching up with him.

Betty was sweet with Sally but her ridiculously triumphant "Sometimes a girl just needs her mother" on the phone to Megan made me want to smack her upside the head. Megan continues to be the class act.

Out of curiousity ... was anyone uncomfortable with the shot of the blood in Sally's panties? Not something one normally sees on TV ...

That's what Sepinwall gets for recapping Girls.
