I don't know about Ortiz. He smashes phones. Don't think he deserves a spot.

The new Gurnick Standard© is if you threw a pitch or had an at-bat after a certain date you're not HOF material. You're not worthy of HOF consideration because you played post-1994.

Does anyone know if the Sirius radio baseball hosts asked Gurnick why he voted for Lee Smith in 2011 & 2012 but didn't find him worthy of his vote in 2013 and this year? Smith is still listed on the ballot. Was there some leaked info after Januar 2012 about a failed PEDs test for Lee? Or did he just realize that Smith threw a whole 126 innings (out of a career total of 1089 IP) after Saint Jack Morris was released by the Cleveland Indians?

Don't think they got around to it. He's also voted for Fred McGriff in the past, FWIW.

I find it interesting that people demand all the voters reveal their ballots. But any voter who reveals his ballot and has a different opinion is critized as a "look at me" voter.

I'd say 100 percent of the ballots should be revealed but it should be all at once after the results are announced.

A month of this ballot revelation makes it look like the story is the ballots, not the candidates.

It's like a sport, pouncing on each questionable ballot, that's why were so up in arms about stuff that really doesn't matter (Maddux getting 98 percent instead of 100 percent).

I maintain that I think people are OK with ballots that are well-argued and have some internal logic to them.

    Of course it's a first-world problem.

But it's also about this: if you're going to do something, do it the right way, especially if you're a well-respected journalist of 30 years.

Greg Maddux: You don't even have to think twice about it.

It's the inconsistency. Why did he vote for Lee Smith two years ago and not now? Why did he not vote for Morris two years ago and now the last two years? Why did he vote for Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripken? Why did he vote for Orel Hershieser?

Not if you're exempting all PED era players.

Morris through 194 ballots last year: 59.3 percent
Morris through 170 ballots this year: 59.4 percent

You are adopting the, "Steroids don't help you hit a baseball" argument for pitchers?

When did the "PED era" begin? Gurnick said "early 1990s" on the radio today, but a large part of Morris' case is because of a game he pitched in 1991. What the hell?
