Not a total shock. The entire ballot with the exception of two suffered through newcomer deflation. When a big class of locks comes through, the holdovers take a step back because voters just don't add the new guys, they remove the holdovers on small ballots.

People need to start doing what I've strongly urged: Leaving off first-year eligibles in favor of guys who have been waiting.

And ... in the long run, no outrageous missteps (outside of the long-term ones).

Kind of cool to have Maddux and Glavine going in together.

We agree on most things, but this would absolutely be a step in the wrong direction.

Wow. That certainly highlights why not to grandstand with a vote...

It might have been two. If he got one more it would have been 74.95. I assume they wouldn't round up. There were two more ballots this year. Last year you needed 427 of 569. Biggio got to 427 this year

And it's not a surprise at the name

Disappointing that Mattingly drops off the ballot. Looks like Jeter will still be the first unanimous inductee.

    Here you go.

    Greg Maddux 555 (97.2, Tom Glavine 525 (91.9), Frank Thomas 478 (83.7), Craig Biggio 427 (74.8 ), Mike Piazza 355 (62.2), Jack Morris 351 (61.5), Jeff Bagwell 310 (54.3), Tim Raines 263 (46.1), Roger Clemens 202 (35.4), Barry Bonds 198 (34.7), Lee Smith 171 (29.9), Curt Schilling 167 (29.2), Edgar Martinez 144 (25.2), Alan Trammell 119 (20.8 ), Mike Mussina 116 (20.3), Jeff Kent 87 (15.2), Fred McGriff 67 (11.7), Mark McGwire 63 (11.0), Larry Walker 58 (10.2), Don Mattingly 47 (8.2), Sammy Sosa 41 (7.2).

Fewer than 28 votes (less than 5 percent), no longer eligible for election by BBWAA: Rafael Palmeiro 25 (4.4), Moises Alou 6 (1.1), Hideo Nomo 6 (1.1), Luis Gonzalez 5 (0.9), Eric Gagne 2 (0.4), J.T. Snow 2 (0.4), Armando Benitez 1 (0.2), Jacque Jones 1 (0.2), Kenny Rogers 1 (0.2), Sean Casey 0, Ray Durham 0, Todd Jones 0, Paul Lo Duca 0, Richie Sexson 0, Mike Timlin 0.

Mattingly's not dropping off ballot. And Biggio was one vote short? Doesn't look like the math to me.

Aside from the usual outrages, one thing that does surprise me is the continued decent level of support for Lee Smith. More voters think he's a Hall caliber player than Schilling.

Using cross-multiplication with the percentages and totals, it seems there were 571 ballots cast.

428 votes gets Biggio to .7495. It would take 429 to get him over .750 (.7513, actually).

(Although I'm not sure if they round up in the third decimal place).

Jeter was part of the PED era, and somebody will pick up Gurnick's fight.

Damn, I bet those words cut like a knife.
