Re: Running Derek Jeter Thread Vol. 1: COUNT THE RINGS

    Russell Martin: .228 in 2011, .267 career
    Mark Teixeira .249 in 2011, .283 career
    Robinson Cano .295 in 2011, .307 career
    Jeter .273 (.312)
    A Rod .295 (.302)
    Brett Gardner .281 (.272)

A majority of the Yankees hitters are hitting below their true talent level. Gardner is better than his career average but at 27 he should be hitting his prime but hasn't really broke through. Kevin long is lucky the Yankees are playing well to cover up his failings as a hit coach.

Long is living off of Granderson's success.

Translation: It is somehow Kevin Long's fault that Jeter's numbers aren't as good as they used to be. Again, Manky is desperately reaching for any reason to avoid the reality that his hero's skills are simply declining due to age.

I think the more obvious reason is that this is the "Year of the Pitcher II" and the Yankees hitting coach is in over his head.

The Angels starting pitcher tonight was making his MLB debut:

    @TylerKepner -- Tyler Kepner

Angels' Garrett Richards: "Probably the best thing that came out of it for me was striking out Jeter. That was pretty cool.”

You don't need to be Ted Williams to be a good hitting coach, but I think it's telling that Kevin Long never made it higher than AAA....where he hit .234 with 1 HR in 127 games.

So we're talking about a player who is 37 years old, had an OPS of .710 last year and has an OPS of .694 this year, and the reason for his bad numbers is the hitting coach? Do I have that correct?

Yes. Jeter is just one of many having a down year (compared to their standard). I lay this at the feet of Kevin Long. Surely Mr. Steinbrenner can find someone more qualified.

Don't try to reason with Manky. It'll only give you a headache.

OK, let's hear the defense of Kevin Long. Tell me why the Yankees should retain him.

Hasn't Long been the hitting coach since 2007? So that would include 2007-2009, when Jeter was much better than he has been the past two years, correct? So wouldn't it stand to reason that it's a decline in his hitting ability/speed, not because of a hitting coach he's had for five seasons.

Re: Running Derek Jeter Thread Vol. 1: COUNT THE RINGS

What happened in 2007 is irrelevant. It's quite obvious that Long is the root cause of the Yankees underachieving offensively, and that there will be grave consequences if they keep him.
