Re: Running Derek Jeter Thread Vol. 1: COUNT THE RINGS

I'm not saying he deserves to be fired.

But, if they don't win it all, a scapegoat will be needed. George's sons aren't that different than the old man.

Granderson is having a great year -- though only hitting .275 -- but he was last year's project.

Could we work on getting Russell Martin to hit higher than .226?

no doubt they're working hard on it, but you're what gives yankee fans a bad name. you're a steinbrenner disciple always going out of your way to find scapegoats. you shoulda been a player -- it's never their fault, it's the coach's fault. as long as martin catches a good game i couldn't care less what he hits -- that's just icing on the cake in this lineup.

swisher got off to a lousy start (no doubt long's fault) but has been on fire and has his numbers approaching where it should be. but long has nothing to do with getting swisher back on track; he never should've let him 'slip' to begin.

and, in another example of the baseball season being a marathon, not a sprint, robinson cano is making like secretariat and emerging as perhaps the yanks' top mvp candidate. his numbers become more and more monstrous as the season drones on. he's more than compensated for a-rod's time on the dl.

and, much to my surprise (though he's likely to slump soon, so calm down, manky), jeter has really hit the ball with much more authority of late... but long doesn't deserve any credit; 'jetes' was straightened out by his first batting guru while he was rehabbing in tampa.

again, i don't believe hitting coaches make chicken salad outta chicken spit, and vet's like jeter rally coach themselves. but younger players who are struggling or fine-tuning can certainly be helped to reach their potential if they have a hitting coach they trust and listen to.

a player, like granderson, is hitting .275 'cause that's what he is in terms of batting average. he strikes out way too much to hit for a gawdy average. where long helped him -- and continues to help him by making sure he maintains his adjustments -- is in hitting the ball squarely when he does make contact. there's cano-like lightning in granderson's stroke -- the ball jumps off their bat. but granderson was absolutely lost regarding left-handers. with long's help, he solved that. just because they solved it a year ago doesn't mean long doesn't deserve high marks for mainenance.

i'm embarrassed by yankee fans complaining that long sucks because everyone's not hitting .300. ya know wh cano is the 'only yankee hitting over .300? 'cause he's the only hitter they have who's capable of hitting .300 these days...

    duh. ...

    Nicely done, shockey.

The best is Yankee fans complaining about down years from Jeter and Rodriguez. It's called age. That may not be as big of a factor with Rodriguez, but his body is breaking down. Some guys hold up longer than others. (Amazing what happens with bodies by chemistry, huh?)

Chemistry is probably part of it, but infield innings on legs add up, too. Jeter and A-Rod have 20k each.

No doubt that is part of it as well.

Haven't you been paying attention? Jetes defies nature and gets better with age!

Four more hits for the Mank Man's main man, Jetes.

His average is up to .290.

He really has been red hot. I wouldn't be surprised if he does end up at .300, and I would have never bet on that going into the season, or early in the season.

    Holy crap!

I'm not calling for the guy's head, and I'm not looking for scapegoats.

I'm just dealing with reality. They fired the pitching coach last year. If they don't win it all, I wouldn't be surprised if they fired the hitting coach this year -- especially if Mattingly is available.

But, that also doesn't mean the guy is above reproach. He did a great job with Granderson last year. But, in a "what have you done for me lately" world, you need to bring results every year.

And, sorry, but .226 does not cut it for an AL catcher -- not to mention that Cervelli calls just as good a game and works better with Sabathia than Martin does.

As for the Steinbrenner thing, I grew up a huge Billy Martin fan (what did I know). I fucking hated George Steinbrenner.

Hell, his kids hated him and didn't want to work for him.

I'm fully aware of all of the old man's flaws.

I came to be a business partner of the Yankees. I'm good friends with some people there. I know what they went through dealing with him.

But, I also know that all people have nuances. I also know that he mellowed some in his old age. I know he was sentimental & generous. I saw him with his grandson.

He was a complicated guy. Yes, I know he treated people like shit. I know it. It's true. He did.

I also know he had another side.

    That's all.

I don't say one made up for the other. I don't think he was perfect -- far from it.

Yankee my Manky ... The Jetes need food! (I don't know what that means; I just thought it was funny.)

I'm surprised our pal Manky wasn't the first to post about the Captain raising his average even more.

Gotta say, I'm really impressed with how he's hitting lately. Hope it keeps up.

I'm going to keep repeating this so perhaps it will finally sink in -- the Yankees are second in the major leagues in runs scored. Those are some damn good results.

The fact that you and Manky are actually calling for the hitting coach to be fired on a team that is second in the majors in run production proves shockey's point about you being among those who give Yankee fans a bad name.

It's Long's fault that Russell Martin sucks? Martin's average declined three consecutive seasons before he came to New York.

I have not said Long is terrible or should be fired.

But, if someone else made the claim, how would you defend it?

Yes, the Yankees have scores a lot of runs, but only Granderson is having a better than average year.

They have a hell of a lineup. The shock would be if they weren't number one or two in runs scored.
