Re: Running Derek Jeter Thread Vol. 1: COUNT THE RINGS

I think the way he's hit the last month and a half has a lot more bearing on how he hits in the future. I think there were some nagging injuries that he played through that limited his ability somewhat. I can't believe people want to write off a guy that hit .334 less than two years ago.

I don't want to jinx it, but Jeter's on a 7-game hit streak. Looking at the Yankees' next few series, I wouldn't be surprised to see him carry this out to at least 20 games. How huge a story would it be if Jeter made a run at DiMaggio??

Don't get me wrong, I love having Granderson on the team and I hope he delivers in October, but you can't deny he was a much better all-around player in 2007. Sure he's better now than in 2008-9 and I am willing to give Long credit for that. It's what Long has done (or more correctly hasn't done) with the rest of the roster that I think he should be held accountable for.

How foolish do the people who thought Jeter should be moved down in the lineup look now? Credit to Girardi for not making a knee-jerk reaction; Jeter has carried the team on his back these past few weeks.

A few more games like this and he'll be back over .300. Never doubt the Captain!!

Again....second in the major leagues in runs scored behind a Red Sox team that has superior offensive talent with Alex Rodriguez missing a very large chunk of the season.

I'm not sure which is dumber, the complaints about Long or this idiotic idea you have that Jeter is going to get nearly 1,000 more hits.

This is the New York Yankees. Since when did "2nd best" become acceptable?

Jeter will end this season at around 3100 hits (20th all time).

He will have a big comeback next season, but let's err on the conservative side and say an even 200 hits in 2012.

That puts him at 3300. 11th all time.

Now, you say I have to factor in his "aging." OK, let's assume he loses 10% of his hits per year.

    2013: 180 hits, up to 3480 6th all time.
2014: 162 hits, 3642 career. Fourth all time.
2015: 146 hits, 3788 career. Third all time.
    2016: 131 hits, 3919 career.
    2017: 118 hits, 4037 career
    2018: 106 hits, 4143 career
    2019: 95 hits, 4238 career #2 all time

...leaving him only 19 hits away from passing Rose.

No matter how you figure it, Jeter will get there

Take it up with Cashman, who put together the second-best roster despite having the higher payroll.

Must be performance art. That is far too detailed for a delusion.

Players don't have big comebacks at 38 without illegal performance enhancers. So I guess you are projecting that your hero is going to cheat to get to 4,000 hits.

Jeter would be 45 in 2019. Officially, only 15 position players in MLB history played at least one game at age 45 or older. And of that group, only four of them played more than 10 games at 45 or older: Julio Franco, Sam Rice, Cap Anson and Pete Rose. Three first basemen, and Rice, who was an outfielder. And Anson and Rose both managed the team as well, so they were willing to put themselves in the lineup:

You seem pretty confident that Jeter will get there, in spite of never playing another position, not having enough power to be a consistent DH, and the fact that the odds are pretty long that he'll even make it to 45.
