There actually is an argument to be made that Jeter is better than Ted Williams. About half of his career was pre-integration (and the league wasn't fully integrated until at least his final years). So Williams was playing against inferior competition...in fact, due to Jeter's ancestry he wouldn't have been able to play against Williams. I would make the argument that any great player from today's game is better than the stars of the 1940s/50s.

I stand by my statement about Frank Thomas. He had some great years after 1997, like the one you mentioned but they were interspersed among some so-so years. Those are nice numbers he put up in 2000 but this was in the same era players like McGwire, Thome, Giambi, Helton, Delgado, Palmeiro, Bagwell, etc were putting up the exact same numbers. A Jeter season is more unique, there are very few players who could do what he did.

No, the point I was making is that from 1998 on, there were 5-10 first basemen that were as good or better than Frank Thomas (the names I listed). You can't say there were that many shortstops better than Jeter over his career, even when Nomar, ARod, Tejada etc were at their peak.

I've enjoyed the back and forth and arguments on this thread but I wish you and others wouldn't make this personal (I've lost count of how many fellation references I've seen)

Addressing the intangibles/captain point: It's not Jeter's job to coddle ARod...any issues he's had have been of his own making. If ARod wanted to step up and be a leader on the Yankees team, he could.

Coddle him? Give me a break. If he hadn't ever stood up for a teammate in trouble, that would have been fine. But he stood up for Giambi and not Rodriguez because he put himself before the good of the team, something he does more than once. Sorry, you don't get credit for leadership if you do things like that.
