and you really believe he can do that over a full seson?

If all hitters were allowed to just triple their best two months, .351 with 108 RBIs would be pretty mediocre.

Exactly. Come on, Devil. I know you are a fanboy, but please don't go into Manky territory on us.

No, but 53 games is a pretty good run. Give the guy credit where it is due.

    Re: Running Derek Jeter Thread

I think 53 games is enough to start giving a guy some credit. If you know math, 1/3rd of the season is enough of a sample. Now do I think he will hit .350 next season? No way. But .350 after July 4th in a pennant race is not chicken shit.

And the descent into Mankyness continues.

It's not nothing, but projecting it out for the entire season is just ridiculous. That isn't what happened. What happened is Jeter looked like crap for three months. If you want to evaluate the 2011 version of Jeter accurately, you need to count that, too.

Nobody is saying the guy sucks. But to suggest he's the second coming of Ted Williams, Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb and Willie Mays all rolled into one (as Manky clearly believes) is ridiculous. He's having a decent season thanks to a couple of really good months. Not a great season.

And for two months he has played like an all star.

When have I elevated him to Manky status? I'm just pointing out the old guy is having a very good run. How good of a run? It's easier to see when played out over 153 or so games.

Many people have trouble visualizing numbers. Ask your wife, OOP, she will tell you. If you say 36 RBI over 51 games, it does not mean shit, but 108 RBI over a season paints a better picture.

The game isn't played in the statbook. It is played on the field.

Stats are a representation of what happens on the field. There are no hypotheticals as to how a player would have performed.

He DID NOT perform like that this entire season. Only a portion. A lot of players can and will have great runs as good as St. Jetes.

Jetes would start at SS for Detroit. Peralta would be moved to 3B. Peralta is in his ninth major league season and has had 2 (maybe 3) years as good as an average Jeter year. The rest of the time he's been much worse than Jeter. His career OBP is .331, Jeter's worst *year* he had an OBP of .340. There's no comparison.

Certainly looks like he could have a huge year in 2012, doesn't it?

You heard it here first: Jeter will be the 2012 batting champion.

Ask my wife? Sounds like you're heading into sexist territory there, too, bub. My wife's actually got a damn good head for numbers.

And no, it does not make it easier to see. It misrepresents what he has done. As somebody already pointed out, you can find stretches like that for plenty of guys. It is the entire season that counts.
