Well, what is their postseason WAR?

    You haven't told us yet.

Exactly. But you have to admire the game. He really does keep finding new ways to be ridiculous.

Bref doesn't keep track of postseason WAR because that would be stupid. It's a tiny subset of games each year and they've been about equal. Jeter is not anywhere near the same level as Chipper Jones. Period. Oh, and Chipper has an MVP :)

So because they don't measure it it's not important?

There's a stat for everything else. I know Jeter's postseason accomplishments and don't need a saber-stat to appreciate them. I just thought it might help you understand what he's done if someone put it into a WAR.

While there is not a specific postseason WAR, Jeter's playoff success would not be enough to make up the difference in career WAR between him and Chipper.

Based on "Regular Season WAR" Chipper's is 83.0 while Jeter is at 70.7.

Jeter has played 147 playoff games, basically the equivalent of a full season. The best WAR Jeter has had in a single season was 7.5 in 1999. Even if we assume that his hypothetical postseason WAR matches the best season of his career (a serious stretch since Jeter had a .990 OPS in 99 and has a .849 OPS in the playoffs), that would bring his total WAR to 78.2. That is still 4.8 behind Chipper and it doesn't even account for the amount of WAR Chipper has added to his career from 92 playoff games.

    Hold on a minute...

You guys are saying Chipper Jones, who is a damn fine baseball player and a HOFer someday, is better than Jeter?

Are we talking about the same Chipper Jones who is hurt about 30 games every season for the past eight years? What is his WAR when his ass is sitting on the DL? Shit, Jones has only two all star appearances in the last eight years.

Jones fine player, but give me the guy who picks up the glove every day.

One of the primary reasons for stats like WAR is that they give players credit for consistent playing time, unlike just looking at rate stats like OBP and SLG. Jones is enough better than Jeter that he still comes out ahead. He's a much better hitter, and didn't start getting the little injuries until post-30.

The replacement third basemen must be a lot crappier than the replacement shortstops.

I just don't see it when Jones is missing so much time. Now, if Jones played 150-155 games a year, I can see where you are coming from, but that is a lot of time he is missing.

And Chipper still puts up better numbers so what's your point.

Plus, being elected to an ASG is a stupid way to determine who is better. Jeter gets elected because he's a Yankee. Period.

Jones puts up better number when he plays. That is my point - Jones sits one in five games.

No, Chipper puts up numbers that surpass Jeter so much that it doesn't matter that he sits occasionally, he is still better
