OK, you're probably right on the Mantle thing. He was a .305 hitter before 1967-68, and in those last two years almost no one hit .300.

Damn, this is entertaining! You stick to your guns, Mank. Keep lobbing those softballs down the middle and let these guys keep hitting tape-measure homers. You make a better argument than any other 7th-grade fan I know! You and Jetes are the best!!!

I like this board, but Sportsjournalists is bizarro-world sometimes. This has got to be the only collection of people who refuse to recognize Jeter as the all-time great that he is.

I'm with you buddy! He should run for President in 2012. Then he can be the leader of the free world AND the super-duper bestest player ever to step between the white lines. Hell, they should induct him into the Hall of Fame TODAY. No, they should rename it the Hall of Jetes!!!

    3. Manky...Minka...close enough to be the same person, right? Plus, nobody has ever seen them (I would presume) in the same place. Plus, we *are* talking about poor, over-the-top acting here. :D

They should name it the USA Today Jon S. Hall of Jetes.

    Does that cover all bases?

Who is the most underrated 3000-hit player? Certainly Jeter is up there, but I think it's Clemente.

He is highly regarded, almost legendary but he always seems to get left out when people talk about the greatest players of all time:

    * He was a .317 career hitter in an era when very few consistently hit .300
    * Arguably the greatest defensive outfielder of all time (he was a RF but I'm including all 3 OF positions). Won 12 straight gold gloves
    * .318/.354/.449 postseason split (he is like Jeter in that his postseason averages are almost identical to his regular season numbers)
    * Might be the only player to be playing at his peak when he reached 3000 hits. Hit .339 over his final 4 seasons

If his career hadn't ended tragically I wonder what numbers he would have ended with. Three hundred homers and 3600 hits seems likely. You have to consider the possibility that he might have been younger than his official birthdate (he certainly did get off to a slow start in the late 50s before hitting his stride, which would make sense if he was still in his teens). It wouldn't surprise me if he ended up playing 7-8 more years. He hadn't lost a step in the field yet, and becoming a DH (obviously he'd have to switch leagues) would be an option.

I think if he was allowed to have his career come to a natural end his name would automatically come up in 'best ever' discussions.

    What do you think?

if anyone else offered this post, i'd say, 'simply you jest.'

but since it's you, jetesboy, i have to assume it's meant to be serious. leaving me with only this response: get some help, man. your grasp of the game is nonexistent.

How many guys are YOUNGER than the birthdate that is listed? Don't they usually go the other way? I bet Jetes knows the answer!
