If anything DP, this site is filled with a lot of self-deprecating people.

Someone please tell me this is all some sort of interactive web-based performance piece.

That's the only possible way this traveshamockery makes ANY sense.

My god! There it is. The perfect word for this.

    It's a traveshamockery!

Way to bring out the perfect word to sum this up, UT!

I used it in a sentence IRL the other day, but have been waiting to use it in front of its intended audience.

Thank you for your approval, IJAG.

Someone add John D. Villarreal to the SportsJournalists.com style guide. His name will be used on many jokes around here for a while.

This is the best question I've seen yet (although I'm admittedly only on page 6 of the thread), although there has been a lot of funny other stuff, much of it, perhaps inadvertently, provided by John himself. :)

The short answer is that I'm quite a small journalistic name, and the subject matter I cover doesn't include this area. If I tried to take on this story, it would be, umm, 'removed' from my jurisdiction, if you will. I've got other work to do, and I don't really feel like putting in the gruntwork to have the professor come in at the last minute and put his name on the research paper. That's where I'm coming from.

Angola, you have a good mind. You should be in forensics.

outofplace, you're a good guy, and I appreciate the 'out' you're giving me here. Thanks. Believe me, John and I have butted heads many times in the past.

I have to say, however, John isn't full of shit on this issue. He definitely knows this subject, and specifically, he knows Mark as well as anyone does. That's the truth.

If it helps you go easier on John, out., he was an avid comic collector growing up as well :) In fact, he's a Marvel shareholder currently. Ha ha.

It's true, siblings can be very different, and John and I are very different in a lot of respects. We grew up on different coasts, and still live on opposite coasts at the moment, so there is some yin and yang there.

I don't think that this area is as black and white as 'used' or 'not used,' though. There are a 1000 areas in between 'not used and 'used everything he could get his hands on.' HUGE differences. Hopefully, John will talk about this in his video(s). For example, some guys use all kinds of stuff and sit on their ass and don't exercise at all. Other guys use and bust their ass as hard as anyone. Giambi, I believe, is a member of the former group. Bonds, I believe, is a member of the latter group.

"But Bonds is still a cheater," you say, "he doesn't belong in the hall of fame." How many pitchers are cheating? How many other guys? Think of the Jason Grimsley 'revelations.' The game is littered with usage; it's not the exception, it's the rule, IMO. So you either say no one gets in from this era, circa like late '80's on, or you have to pick guys based on merit from that era. That's my take, anyway.

Are there some guys who didn't use and don't deserve to be lumped in with the users? Absolutely. But I think it's a lot less clear than many think just who those guys are. We all thought Palmero was in that group after the Congressional hearings, didn't we?

Why, exactly, was it so difficult for your brother to say just that in introducing the subject. That at least made sense, though people are going to disagree with your premise.

Thanks, UT. The difference between us is that I'm a writer (or try to be one), and John is a talker. He was given a radio show on KSFO - one of the top radio stations in the country, and in one of the top-5 markets in the country with very, very limited experience. There's a reason for that - it was no accident.

John doesn't use notes in his videos (I watched the first two quickly), as I said early in this thread, he's an orator. A natural orator. Plus, he's a trained orator, meaning he's done a ton of work on radio and TV and had that experience (working with the camera, etc.)

Again, I'd say just watch the videos if you're interested in the least. At worst, you'll be entertained. At best, you'll learn something about the subject (useful for columns, articles, etc. - the dearth of knowledge of this subject is amazing) and about Mark, depending on what John says/discloses. I'll find out along with everyone else.
