I saw a report that the shooter had a clean record and a concealed carry license. Unknown yet whether the weapons were obtained legally but there was no reason he could not buy them legally.

Sorta. The big difference is that the military versions can fire full auto in spray or bursts. Civilian version is one trigger pull one shot. It is still a very deadly weapon because it is often loaded with a thirty round magazine, and changing mags is very quick if you are familiar with the weapon. The Colorado movie theater shooter had one with a 100 round mag that jammed on him and he had to go to pistols or the death toll there would have been much worse.

It's a great day for the NRA. Gun sales and gun-clutching rose considerably after Sandy Hook, which produced a cottage industry of right wing hatred. Imagine what the right will do with this. Imagine what the GOP nominee for president will say in five days or so.
This thing has it all. There's opportunity for the right to tell us this is God's will because gays are rebels against God. There's opportunity for Alex Jones and his people. And there's room for Trumpian claims that this validates his temporary ban on Muslims. Great day for many who will call for prayer but do nothing on Earth lest they upset their NRA benefactors.

Agreed. But Facebook and the paper of record for the city are not the same thing. My bet would be that the paper will also include an editorial on gun control. What more would you suggest?

Fair enough. We just don't know enough yet.

M-16s (and the modern M-4s) are fully auto. AR-15s are semi auto.

Certainly possible. Civilian trauma centers get a lot of gunshot wounds but AR shootings would be far less frequent. Pure speculation on my part.

How many people you think you could kill with an airplane? Hope something like that never happens.

THIS IS NOT ABOUT GUNS! What the fuck is wrong with you people? This was OBVIOUSLY a terrorist attack. The largest since 9/11. Remember that one? If your talking about guns right now, you are part of the problem.
