Mateen, 29, is a U.S. citizen of Afghani descent from Port St. Lucie, Florida, according to CBS News. He has ties to radical Islamic ideology, CBS reports. His name was confirmed by U.S. Rep. Alan Grayson at a press conference.

Port St. Lucie is about 125 miles away from Orlando.

Police have not yet said why Mateen attacked the Pulse club. His father told MSNBCthat the shooting was not about his son’s religion, but that his son became very angry after seeing two men kissing in Miami months ago. He said “we are apologizing for the whole incident.”

Elsewhere, I'm sure they agree with the Muslim spokesman that we should not sensationalize the WORST MASS SHOOTING IN U.S. HISTORY.

In fact, I think I'll suggest we run this in Briefs when I get to work today.

    Yes, a father's apology brings back 50 bullet-riddled humans.

They probably were already in town after the Grimmie shooting. Kudos to whoever for recognizing important news and figuring out how it fits in the box later.

Yep. Not about religion. Just hatred of gays. No way a religion would think it's acceptable to kill such people.

Most deadly mass shooting in America yet. No matter how you look at it, it's a lot for one guy.

I'm not suggesting a second shooter, btw.

    This is disgusting.

The total of 20 was never official. They hadn't been inside yet, as it was being swept for explosives.

If all you can do today is tweet/post about how angry you are about guns, you might as well join a terrorist organization and get some compensation out of the PR work you're doing for them.

It's times like this that we really miss Muhammad Ali.

I hope Kahreem can step up and fill the void.

Laughable that the father would say this has nothing to do with religion. The shooter may have pulled the trigger because he hates gays and not because he was motivated by his religion. But it's naive to think religion didn't influence his hatred of gays (and the hatred many others express on a daily basis).

No, it's disgusting that we anesthetize ourselves from having to dig in and solve problems like gun violence and Islamic terrorism by accessorizing.
