Sure. Local media roundup. 99% of the Trib's coverage is nadled by one person, Peter Nickeas.

But, the stories have no "legs". They don't stay in the news. They don't become the basis for national columns, wall-to-wall cable coverage, political statements, etc.

    All true.

A single crime in Lincoln Park will draw more attention from city leaders, and concerned citizens than all the shootings on the South & West sides.

Take a look at how many cops are assigned to Michigan/Chicago intersection and surrounding blocks. You'll find clusters of cops on each corner. Crime on Michigan Ave. is bad for business.

Black people killing each other? Who cares?

Maybe the fact they are an everyday occurence and that the shootings you describe as only being covered for politcal agendas happen ever so rarely would probably be the biggest factor.

Fox news should be 24/7 from the "ghetto" to get your political agenda out there.

So thankful we have YF to care about the black youths in Chicago.

That's much of Chicago's (and the nation's) attitude in a nutshell. The emphasis is not on preventing crime (particularly gun crime), but on making sure it stays in certain neighborhoods.

However, I would argue that even the crimes that make a big news splash are gone fairly quickly. That's a combination of their sheer volume (if one is happening right after another, it's hard to focus on just one), and unwillingness to do anything about it. And it's not just Congress. There are plenty of judges, sheriffs and police departments who don't seem too interested in talking about this, especially if it involved the possible regulation of guns.

Essentially, we've declared it's just a normal, every day thing -- the cost of freedom -- that a couple would load up on guns, shoot cops, take their guns, run to Wal-Mart, shoot the good guy with a gun (the only thing that can stop a bad guy with a gun, though he didn't), hide in the ammo section while they count on their weaponry and adult diapers to see them through.

I'm sure there were people going to that march who were praying for a firefight.

One more time, and then I'm done:

The race of the victim is not the driving factor in coverage, and before you even cite it, teevee "news" doesn't know what the fuck it's doing and is in large part a disgrace to the profession.

Gun violence is a crime of opportunity and proximity, so it stands to reason that areas that present more opportunity would see more crime. Once violence becomes so prevalent, the question becomes about factors that could be causing it. Poverty, education, systemic discrimination, mental illness, access to guns, etc.

In other words, things that are covered with great frequency and vigor by any media outlet worth its salt. And things politicians don't give a flying fuck about except when it's convenient, and maybe even when (GASP) the media spotlights it and the public demands action.

Wrong again, YF. First of all, see many of the other posts that followed, all from posters who know far more about this topic than you do. Not that it takes much to know more than you do about the media.

I didn't dodge anything. I asked you to back up your claim first. You are the one making an accusation, not me. Back up your assertions. You want to claim the media is evil and journalists are all about pushing an agenda? Back up that claim. Rather than do that, you attacked me.

    You are such a coward.

Others at least have the guts to try and explain discrepancy in coverage.

You won't answer a simple question.

You are the one who won't even try to back up your claim. I'm doing what I always do, asking people who make claims to actually back them up. You are dodging that because you lack the courage and honesty to admit that you can't or you are too lazy to actually provide the support.

Again, the only response you really deserve in any discussion is "Media BAD!!! GRRRR" Because that is really all you care about. Slamming the media, with no concern at all for backing up your assertions.

    Hard to argue this.

I didn't try to explain it, I did explain it. Would you like me to do it again?
