Mass shooting on campus in Oregon

That Onion piece about US being only nation unable to prevent this sort of thing has popped up a lot, but honestly this is the one that I think is most accurate:

Why doesn't Barry have a news conference and act all somber after just about every weekend when his home town of Chicago has a bunch of gang murders? Oh that's right, you can't demagogue about gun violence unless it happens in the suburbs and scares the soccer moms. My bad.

 

Well, you know, as Jeb says, "stuff happens".

 

Barry doesn't care about black people. But seriously. Demagogue? I think it's quite appropriate to question why there are so many of these instances going on and try to fix it. We'll likely never fix gang/drug/bad relationship shootings.

 

Oh, so all of the sudden we need to change the hash tag to #BlackLivesDon'TMatterAsMuch

 

Except, you assume that those things I mentioned apply only to black Americans.

 

And if the legal owner's negligence results in someone getting a gun and committing a violent crime with it, they should be held accountable.
Liability insurance wouldn't be a bad idea either.

Whether the Oregon college was a gun-free zone is up for debate, but it's irrelevant. The shooter apparently chose the target because he was a student there.

There was a time, before Mothers Against Drunk Drivers, when drinking and driving was not nearly as stigmatized as it is today. I lived in Texas when it became the last state to pass a law making it illegal to drive with an open container of alcohol. The lege only passed it because the federal government told them that if they did not pass an open container law some hundred million in highway funding was going to be held up. Guys used six-packs as units of travel, as in "It's about a six pack from here to San Antonio." and thought that they had a God-given right to drive with a beer between their legs to keep their nuts cool.

That's much less true today. Most people, including many posters on this board, have little to no tolerance for getting behind the wheel after having some drinks.

We need to find a way to apply that kind of social pressure to gun violence instead of glorifying it.

 

Yes, the laws haven't stopped drunk driving, but over time, they've changed the culture.
