Masters for Tiger

I don't think people here are so much interested in TMZ's "coverage" as they are delighting in the prospect of a less-than-decorous media gathering at the Masters, thinking it would serve both the blue bloods and Tiger right.

Another thing is, big, bad TMZ's coverage the last few months has been extremely tame on Tiger. Some would say boring. All it's really done is reported the same thing you'd read in your weekly paper, and many of their stories have the same overexcited words that you usually see from "onlookers" talking about how beautiful Angelina looked while walking the red carpet at the premiere for a documentary on saving the children of Peru.

Check out the first page of stories about Tiger. Zzzzzzzzz.

And Ferguson gets criticized for breathless prose about Tiger.

Tiger will probably be like 90 percent of the other celebrities, who start off complaining about the tabloids but eventually start calling them to tell them to be at the airport, just in case the paparazzi want a shot of him being a "star just like US" by going through security screening.

TMZ isn't an omnipresent goliath and it's not as powerful as many people think it is, including its owner. The key to their big celebrity success stories is that they have great sources (re: well-paid ones) inside hospitals and courthouses, so they get info on celebs who croak and ones who get sent to the hoosegow (witness their breathless coverage of Paris Hilton being transferred to jail). But on other types of stories that tabloids love, they're no better and no worse than every other gossip site out there. And in an age when scandals eventually always disappear, no matter how big they seem at the time - Letterman's career was finished after his sex scandal, right? - this one will probably eventually fade away the same way, though it will take a bit more time than the average sex tape from a B-lister.

The TMZ is always right argument sort of takes a hit as well with the way they've been insisting he'd come back at the Tavistock Cup.

Thank you for the latter comment. They're not always right. And they don't care if they're wrong.
The big test on heckling will be at the Players Championship. If Tiger resumes his normal schedule, it will be Masters, Quail Hollowa, then Players. It might be two blocks from Tour headquarters but a lot of bubbas go to that tournament and get a snoot-full. Phil got a ration of shit on one hole last year.

    Nice message, Tiger.

You sacrificed NOTHING for your family.

And your wife now knows it.

I actually think this is the straight truth. Tiger owes me nothing, and frankly, I don't care when he plays and when he doesn't. But I'm still stunned his wife didn't tell him "If you're serious about making this work between us, you're not playing your favorite major. You're going to go on a vacation with our kids far away from there, and be tortured by the fact that you want to be there."

But whatever. It's not my marriage. I have no idea what their arrangement is.

The people who think he'll come back and dominate this tournament are kidding themselves though. He hasn't dominated in Augusta in quite awhile.

Both posts are exactly right, IMO. I'm curious what the average golf follower expects. Does he/she really believe Tiger will win in Augusta?

The average Colin Cowherd listener must believe that, because he was talking today (had it on while I was in the shower) about how Tiger was going to dominate at Augusta, and all his sponsors were going to come crawling back to him, and he would get them back, but at a higher rate. (I believe he said Gatorade would "grovel" to have him back for twice what they were paying him previously.) And that he would be more popular than ever.

I have to believe this thesis of wishful thinking has something to do with Cowherd torpedoing his own marriage and now he just got engaged (also announced today on his show), so he has to say these kind of things to convince himself he'll be better than ever, and that he and Tiger are kindred spirits.

I bet your thesis is right.

If you're listening to Cowherd in the shower, do you have to then shower again?
