And yet for eight years there was a pretty simple way to stop Vick: Make him throw it. Challenge him to complete that 10-yard pass to the tight end across the middle, because he simply couldn't do it. He has finally harnessed his talent, and great for him. But, leaving aside the dogfighting, that was a long long road to get him to true top-flight QB status, and not a road most NFL teams are willing to travel.

Fine. You'd rather have Luck. I'd rather have Newton. I'm OK with that. You're obviously not. Get over it.

I'm sorry, I didn't realize there was no debate allowed here. Apologies.

You can debate all you want.

I am disturbed that the only person siding with me is Devil, though.

So yeah, check that. Gimme Luck.

It's always good to reflect when you have certain posters that agree with you.

Here's the thing LTL. NFL teams are going to have to adjust to dealing with spread formation quarterbacks because more and more, that's what the best athletes at that position will be. More and more college teams are using the spread, and a LOT more high school teams are. You can't ignore the talent pool when drafting to focus on an ideal of a quarterback that's getting rarer and rarer. Luck will likely be a good NFL quarterback, unless I (and you) are very much mistaken. Newton has a higher chance of failure, but also a much higher chance of being an unbelievable NFL quarterback. He's not a Smith who was the top pick because the Niners needed a quarterback in the draft no matter what. Newton is a dominator. Those are rare, and domination trumps technique.

People are going think hard before drafting Newton because of the Tebow deal. Only thing is..Newton is 10 times better than Tebow was. Or is.

Fair point and I could see the game evolving that way. But the spread with a running QB works because somewhere on the field the QB has a major advantage over a defender. In the NFL, though, those physical advantages don't exist, or at least are extremely rare. It's the same reason Reggie Bush doesn't dominate. In college he could beat anyone to the hole. In the NFL, not so much.

Newton could end up being an interesting test case, and the guy two years from now might get drafted higher because someone made it work with Newton, but for now everyone is still looking for the Manning/Brady clone.

Two points. One, Tebow has hardly been a failure yet. The Broncos suck, but that's not on him. He is specializing in what he did best in college, creating red zone touchdowns. It's a useful skill.
Two, most drafted quarterbacks of all styles of play fail in the NFL, or at least fail to become quality starters. Hell, there aren't enough of them to go around and everyone knows it. The quarterbacks who don't fit the mold get more scrutiny, and hence more people are aware of their failures.
Michael Vick had a checkered record as Atlanta's QB to say the least. But he had some playoff seasons and playoff wins. He wasn't a bust, just not the great player the Falcons had hoped (and paid) for.

I'm not saying Tebow has been a failure, or that he will be a failure. Just that I think Newton is a better QB and overall football player.

Cam Newton isn't even close to being as fast as Vick, either laterally or accelerating in a straight line.
