let's be honest here. this job probably will start out closer to 35k than $40k. at $35k you'd bring home about $2,500 a month.

    here's a rental for $1,200 a month.

doesn't sound like a great deal to me.

  2. Well first of all, that house is actually in Justin, which is a long way from Dallas. But I see your point.

Yeah, you're probably headed for apartment living, but you can find decent apartments that are more than affordable. Plus, DCTF is actually located in Carrollton, and renting there is much cheaper than in the Dallas city limits.

You could always live in Arlington, amid the strip malls and violence.

my only question, PBR: if you're running the show for DC, should you and your family actually have to live in an apartment?

(and i apologize for my lack of knowledge of townships around the dallas area.)

that'd toughen up mrs. petty the heartbreakers.

  6. Arlington to Carrollton is 30 miles. No thanks.

Carrollton is five minutes from a lot of great places in Dallas, including the Galleria. You're not far from Lewisville either, and you can live there for a decent price, too, and Lewisville is very nice. My sister-in-law and her family lived there for several years. Their apartment was very nice -- much nicer than the dump I live in now -- and they didn't pay much more than I do now.

  7. I don't think you'd necessarily have to, TP. If you dig around on Craigslist or the classifieds you can often find a duplex, townhome or even a house that is affordable on that salary. Plus, if the new hire is married, chances are the spouse works, too, and that's a faster route to a house rather than an apartment.

PBR - if you're given the responsibility of running the show on a daily basis, you should be paid and be able to live a middle-class lifestyle without disclaimers.

  9. I'm not saying I don't agree with ya', TP. I do. But 40K is more than what a lot of others make in similar positions.

    fair enough, PBR. fair enough.

I disagree with this assessment, but can see the point you are trying to make -- that journos these days are cramming more and more work into their day for less and less.

    Not saying. Just saying.
