That $40K is more than a lot of others make in similar positions.

  2. When you compare staff sizes and the amount of content that has to be produced and available to the public every day, I think it is. A friend of mine is Managing Editor for a small, community paper and she makes a lot less than $40k/year. And she manages a staff larger than that at DCTF.

Just a matter of perspective, I guess. Should it be more than $40K? Absolutely. But that's just the way it is.

$40k goes further than you think in the Metroplex, outside of Dallas proper. Working in Carrollton, you could live in Lewisville/Flower Mound/The Colony/Coppell and do just fine.

The position is also going to deal heavily with revamping the website and online content as well.

    Agreed.

That line of thinking has something to do with why most in this business get paid next-to-nothing. If enough people demanded more, the suits couldn't continue to get away with it.

As long as the line for sportswriting jobs is around the block and then some, they will.

i've never understood the multitude of excuses people in this business use to qualify shitty wages.

Texas prides itself on the best high school football in the nation. No other sport in Texas comes close to the popularity and power of football in this state. DCTF is the premier magazine for Texas high school football, making it the premier publication for the premier high school football programs in the country. That alone makes this position worthy of a higher salary than what's being advertised. You can justify 35-40K all you want and I know there are a lot of unemployed sports editors and writers out there who will jump at the money advertised. Still doesn't make it right. If those offered will demand more, they'll pay more. But my guess is that at least one of the finalists will jump at the advertised amount and that's the person who'll get this gig.

$40k goes a lot further in Dallas than say, New York or San Francisco.

I get the "goes further than" argument, but still. Here's the hiring scale, to start, from the challenged Dallas school district:

Salaries starting at $42,000 — $66,978, based on credible years of experience
    · New Teacher Support and Mentoring Program
    · Hiring bonus available
    · Annual stipends ranging from $2,500 - $4,000

That an ME at a respected pub makes far less than that in the same region says a lot about how the industry is not that valued and, as it continues to be streamlined, won't be missed as a middle-class profession.

That's true. Heck, lots of jobs that don't even normally require a university degree pay more than journalists jobs.

so the person who gets this job should feel lucky to almost earn what a first-year teacher makes? is that what you're getting at?

I get your position, tom, and agree, to a point. same time, I've been doing this full-time now (after 3 years of 30ish hour part-time) for seven years or so. I know, nowhere near many on here. but, my point is that I'm still not up into the bracket being advertised here. so that to start, in my thinking and experience, ain't that bad.
