I'm told the furlough idea was floated - and rejected.

Rejected by management? That makes more sense than the union rejecting it.

So they want you to be paid less money, but you've got to work just as much. Yep, a win-lose always is better than a win-win.

Yeah, I've been a little surprised that the news of furloughs is met with a stronger reaction here than the papers that just have across the board pay cuts. I'm not saying either option is good, but an extra week off (even unpaid) is better than just having your pay cut.

It's gotten to the point that when a friend working somewhere -- not just newspapers or media outlets anymore, by the way -- tells me he's got to take a furlough, I congratulate him on dodging all the worse bullets. A few extra days off to smell the roses doesn't have to be bad, assuming you can still pay the mortgage, put food on the table and straighten Sally's teeth.

(Wait. Did I really type "smell the roses?" I meant smell the heaping piles of excrement all around us nowadays.)

To be fair, not everyone reads the jobs board, or reads every post on said jobs board.

I apologize to Moddy for my gross negligence in not reading every thread.... I am bad person who should be tarred and feathered in the town square.

Long as we're straight on that! We'll take it to the adjudication board and see if we can cut you a break. This time.
Good thing I'm feeling so chipper today.

Tyler Dunne still was in college when this thread was last relevant.
