    Not sure what that means.
Exactly, it's only damaging to the person if they believe it is. Although most bowl games provide the internet it could be considered a "gift". The gifts are like $500 jackets or $2000 suits they're between cheap/gag and durable. Not handing out laptops and cars.

Yeah and by then I'll be working for a company that pays much better, and provides it. When you started out I'm pretty sure your first job didn't cover it.

Heading to Phoenix tomorrow to cover Iowa v Oklahoma in the Insight Bowl. I haven't covered a bowl game before, so I'm looking forward to it.

Not having to worry about class should be nice, too.

Wrong. My first job most certainly paid for me to travel, from high school games two miles away to SEC football an hour away. And my salary was atrocious. But the point is, if you're a professional you should have someone picking up the tab. And maybe that will help you not be so wide-eyed at the swag table.

Was it a newspaper or an online company?

    Small newspaper.

Exactly, papers that have been around a while no matter big or small have that capability.

What play and myself hinted at earlier was if your writing doesn't show improvement from what you've written on here, you won't get to that next level.

I'm very much on the "cheap gifts are just fine to take" side of the spectrum when it comes to pens or flash drives with media guides on them or free food, but a laptop accessory kit just seems way over the top. That's definitely the kind of thing I would leave alone.

One way to look at it: Would it feel strange to ask to borrow the thing from a coworker or friend? I once had to ask to borrow headphones at a game, and I was very embarrassed. (I left them on my desk in the office. Never again.) Imagine asking to borrow a cordless mouse or a laptop case?

Not necessarily. I've worked at papers that said "want to cover an NFL game? Do it on your own dime and time."

Not only did I get a goodie bag, I met some cool players and coaches. I think I am now friends with some players and coaches now. They told me how cool I am n stuff.

How much do the folks shell out for your field trips?
