I haven't shown any of my work on here, or are you referring to someone else.

Not necessarily. I've worked at papers that said "want to cover an NFL game? Do it on your own dime and time."

That's true, it also depends on where the paper is located and how much is put into it financially. But papers that are more recognized and in metropolitan cities or good size towns are able to pay your way.

You'd be surprised, kid. I'll just leave it at that.

Which has been almost nothing...Not seeing where he's coming from but ok. Taking the next level on this board or in journalism because I haven't had a setback and being credentialed at 17 for two bowls isn't a slouch. Not saying its everything but its not nothing.

I honestly don't doubt it but our newspaper doesn't pay for your travel I'll leave it at that. It's almost a miracle it's still running.

We've debated this here over the years, but I think it's a bad idea to pay for your own travel -- under any circumstances -- if the employer isn't willing to do it. If managers plead poverty to their staff that the only way things will get covered is for (likely already-underpaid) staffers to go into their own pocket, then those staffers should just say "tough shit." Personal pride might kick in when you've covered a team for an entire season on the company dime and then they say "no bowl" and you go anyway and pay for it, but as a professional I think you have to draw the line somewhere. If the paper's going under, so be it. I'm not shelling out any portion of my paycheck so they can get event coverage.

Off topic, but Starting17, if it is a real poster, is being taken advantage of by an unscrupulous website.

Any operation that needs a kid to pay his/her own way is shady. Any decent editor would say thanks, but no thanks to an offer for coverage that would entail shelling out more than a few dollars in gas or bus far money.

Yeah I mean I really don't like it but it is one way to 1) get experience you can't get by sitting at home and watch the game and just copy what other people write 2) getting noticed and having the ability to go into a job interview knowing you've got more experience than someone just in school. This season I was credentialed for the Washington Huskies and I didn't go on any away games because I can't afford that right now. I live in Seattle so the home games are easy. I saved up to go to the Kraft fight hunger bowl this year because it was cheaper than the Alamo Bowl.

I have a job lined up with the Seattle Times starting next fall so the pay will go up at least. But I mean I like the company I work for, but the pay doesn't help with travel.

Why do you have to cover this? I'm sure there are plenty of opportunities to cover high school sports in your backyard, and get better clips.

What type of "job" do you have "lined up"?

Why do I have to cover "this"? meaning like UW? Because I'm going to UW and I do cover our HS sports as well. reporting, some high school and fill in work.
