Men's suit, pants question -- cuffs or no cuffs?

Discussion in 'Anything goes' started by The Big Ragu, Mar 17, 2007.

  1. Thanks for all the khaki recs. I've heard great things about Bill's, and will have to check them out.

How about for slacks? The kind you might wear with a sportcoat or out to dinner.

I don't notice a lot of difference, but I like being slightly rumpled. They aren't treated, so if you want them to look dressy, you'd have to iron.

I can't recommend highly enough finding a good tailor, and having your suits and shirts made to measure. The fit is amazing, and you can get any styling and details that you prefer. A good tailor will explain the details that Frank has gone over, and you'll understand why these things make such a difference.

To pay $800 for a suit off the rack is insane, you can get one made for less that will fit you perfectly, no off the rack suit will regardless of how much tailoring you have done to it.

If you want to look stylish/elegant do NOT use magazines. Things that are hip today are out tomorrow, while true elegance is timeless.

Unless I am wearing a suit, I am pretty much wearing khakis or cords or, in the summer, poplins. I have three pair of wool dress slacks that aren't part of suits, but I seldom wear them. Khakis are classic with blazer or tweed sport coat.

These are the Brooks poplins, which are very nice but wrinkle easy. You might get two wears between pressings and even though they are cotton, unfortunately they have to be dry-cleaned. But they are nice and cool in hot weather:

I bought mine five or six years ago when they had more colors: olive, navy, gray, black, stone, tan, I bought all of them.

Tommy bahammadress slacks hold up very well . You can throw them in the corner for a week and then hang them and wrinkles will come out.

I found very good quality dress slacks at Joseph A Banks - - needed some on business trip and had never been to a Banks before. My eyes were open to quality. Also had taylor that hemmed my pants on spot.

I think you're way overestimating the budgets most of us have.

Honestly, I disagree with the "off the rack" will never fit you perfectly no matter how much tailoring you have done to it. I tend to buy the same three makes of suit, although haven't bought a new suit in a while. They fit me pretty perfectly. I actually think I can fill out a lot of off-the-rack suits fairly well.

Ragu, what's happening with your shirt in the latest photo? Is it a weird reflection or are you sporting some kind of tie-dye?

Who says that's me in the photo?

Just a guess... I'd imagine it is a combination of a bad fishbowl camera and too much sunlight coming from a bad angle.

Agree. If you're a certain body type, off the racks are fine but nothing beats a made to measure.

What I'd like to know is, where the hell do you buy a made to measure for $800.00? That's not even a really expensive off the rack job.

I thought that too. Maybe he meant that you need to get to know your taylor in the biblical sense to get those prices.

In between off rack and made to order are trunk sales . Hickey Freeman does them - you can pick the cloth and they will make to your measurements at same price as off rack.

The last thing I had made to measure was a Harris Tweed sports jacket. I spent some time in Scotland, went out to the island of Harris/Lewis and bought the fabric from the guy who actually wove it.

    Beat that, Boom. :)
