Al Sharpton is indeed a radio host and Jesse Jackson is the head of the Rainbow Coalition, which is basically a despicable organization that makes him rich off the backs of the poor people he is supposedly trying to help.

    Forget it, s'chick.
"What about Duke?" is the other distraction besides "What about rap music?" for people who think Imus did nothing wrong and don't really want to say it, largely because they want their Caucasian morning-drive bad-boys to keep stroking their Ids for them.

Fenian -- That is such a typical response from a liberal -- anyone who doesn't agree with us is a bigot -- Liberals seem to love the first amendment until someone says something THEY deem to be politically incorrect or offensive. Then they hire Al Sharpton to try and shut them up.

I haven't heard anyone excuse what Don Imus said. Not one person of any credibility and not one person on here and you know it. To even hint that is the root of this issue is ridiculous.

It is the outrageous amount of over-the-top grandstanding by people in the media and people who should know better, like Vivian Stringer, that is what has been ripped by the Jason Whitlock's of this society and rightfully so.

I don't like shock jocks, i think for the most part it is bad radio. But words from shock jocks don't kill and they shouldn't define who you are -- this "scandal" should have died five minutes after it started.

People need to get over themselves.

zagoshe, it took damn near a week (might have been longer, I'm not sure) for Rutgers to hold a press conference about this. The fact that it didn't go away wasn't Rutgers' fault, they kept quiet for some time.

Presidential hopefuls and other political figures don't sit opposite shock jocks. Although part of Imus' routine is his over the top candor, he's much more respected than your average shock jock.

As far as Whitlock ripping Vivian Stringer, I've lost even more respect for him.

Don Imus is probably the grandfather of the shock jock. He has had a very large hand in creating the genre and he is painted with the same brush as Howard Stern and the rest of that kind of "push the envelope for the sake of pushing it" type of radio hosts.

We have one here in town that is far more offensive than anything Imus could say and he always gets big-time guests to come on with him.

It is amazing how ratings and audience size always seem to trump the other stuff when guests are being booked.

And Oz -- why did they speak at all and if they were so hurt by all this why did it take a week to respond?

It was a well orchestrated "extract the most pity and get the most mileage out of an issue" move by the people pushing the buttons in this whole thing.

What would have happened if the day after Imus said his thing, C. Vivian issued the following statement...

"Don Imus apparently said some very rude and ignorant things about our players. While his remarks were offensive and hurtful, we don't wish to give them any more credence than they deserve. Our players have the highest of self esteem, they are confident in who they are and they are certainly not going to be defined by the rants of a radio guy whose main goal is to say shocking things to get ratings. We are strong-minded, mentally tough black women and we are proud of what we accomplished this year. Because of this we have already moved past Don Imus and we aren't going to waste one more minute thinking about him."

If that statement would have been released, how much mileage would the self-promoting idiots have gotten out of this and how much grand standing could have really gone on?

    C. Vivian was handled and her team was used by the Al Sharpton crowd.

Again, women should just take the shit that's thrown at them. How dare they be offended! They have no right.

You're 100% right about Stringer. Addressing the media about her personal trials and tribulations of being a person of color and a woman had no place here.

Sportschick -- Again, are women as strong as men? And if so - and they tell us they are -- why do they feel the need to play helpless victim from the weaker sex every time it suits them or it appears as some group somewhere can get mileage out of it?

This isn't a man/woman thing -- this is about the fact that we've become a nation of a bunch of big fucking babies. A bunch of thin-skinned, bed wetting whiners who for some reason need to make a federal case and grandstand every time our feelings are hurt.

Get over it and get over yourself.

    My God.

And C. Vivian equating some of the struggles she had coming up and the racism she faced with the rants of an idiot shock jock does a disservice to the real struggles people of my color have had to go through in this country to get as far as we have.

There are black shock jocks and white shocks and they all say stupid things -- they don't oppress or hold back anyone nor do they lynch or discriminate against anyone either.

When you become a woman and have to deal with the shit we deal with, then you can bitch. Until that happens STFU. If women don't speak out and say something's unacceptable, people think it's OK.

I'm sooooo sorry Vivian Stringer and I have dared offend your sensabilities by saying something foul was offensive. Next time, we'll make sure we shut up and go make your dinner since that seems to be what you want.

Oh, and women are far stronger than men can ever hope to be. If men had to go through what women do, they'd be in a mental home in no time.

    Re: AWESOME JASON WHITLOCK COLUMN

whitlock is a growing voice among black conservatives - not a lot of competition, i.e, alan keyes, clarence thomas, etc.

to me, his color is secondary. he's a conservative. and all that implies: anti-gay, anti-abortion, anti-government, denial of global warming and protection of carbon-producing industry, misogyny, religion in public schools, militarism, foreign adventurism, the "surge in iraq, eliminating estate tax on the rich, using immigrants for cheap labor while opposing benefits or citizenship, gated communities, the Patriot Act, erosion of civil rights, globalization and free-trade sending american jobs to india and china...

    need i continue

whitlock owns all of this as a conservative....he says african-americans need to take responsibility for themselves - how much of the above-mentioned conservative agenda has he accepted responsibility for?

when it's convenient for him he becomes an indignant political commentator. but when other conservatives are defending the entirety of their sorry agenda, he's goes back to the comfort of his sports column. can't be bothered with the other stuff.

i'd like to see more responsibility from mr. black conservative. and not just shouting down al sharpton and jesse jackson. on the whole conservative agenda.

Do you actually believe they wanted more mileage out of this? Because I don't. I believe rather than come out with some rushed comment, they thought about exactly what they wanted to say, did it once, then moved on to whatever the next step was.

Also, keep in mind they announced they would meet with Imus at the press conference. So I'm guessing they had to wait and make sure a time and place was set before coming forth with that info.
