What happened to the $100-mil deal he was angling for?

If those numbers are correct, looks like the Red Sox got the best of Bor-ass in this deal.

No doubt. So much for the three-year deal AND the $100 million he supposedly wanted here.

Larry put the six-year, $52 million contract on the table and a gun to Matsuzaka's head. He told Boras either Matsuzaka's signature or brains will be on the contract.

    End of negotiations.

The story also notes escalator clauses that could bring the deal's value to 6 yrs/$60 million. Seems about right.

Good deal all around...as long as you accept the fact that bidding $51. mill was a good deal.
I think you can say Bor-ass blinked on this one.

Sounds fair for a guy who has never pitched in an MLB game and who was not a free agent. :)

At least the second time in two years he's done that. Also blinked on Jered Weaver.

Guy can still put food on the table, of course.

As for $100 mil, it can still be spun that way by both sides.

Actually, no, Boras can't spin it that way because he was the one insisting that you can't count the $51.1 posting as part of Matsuzaka's contrat.

Then again, he also said that there were multiple teams that were willing to post $40 or $50 million for Matsuzaka, when in fact nobody but Boston bid even $40 million.

Though Boston is paying over $100 million for the guy, only half will count toward the luxury tax. The post doesn't count against the cap (nice loophole to help the high-revenue teams)

In fairness, Boras never asked for $100 million nor did he ever expect he would get $100 million. He just suggested that that would be his market value. Here's the quote:

"Free-agent pitchers who are 26 and have Matsuzaka-like ability receive salaries in excess of $100 million over five or six years in free agency," Scott Boras said.

Sure he can. He just has to talk out of both sides of his mouth. He can do that, me thinks.

He can say a pitcher of Matsuzaka's caliber is worth $100 million. You think he won't bring this up when he's trying to land Zito a nine-figure deal? "Look, the Red Sox spent $100 million to get a guy who has never thrown a pitch here. You're getting a battle-tested AL ace for the same price the Sox spent on Matsuzaka. This is a bargain."

the sox spent $100 million to get Matsuzaka. That's a fact. Even if only $60-odd million of that will actually be seen by Matsuzaka, the Sox did spend $100 million to get him.
