Probably not a "cheap hire" but the days of even $70k hires on pro beats are gone except in extreme cases.

 

I will miss this guy. He was the best Bama guy in years. Although I liked Rappaport, Izzy was my favorite to read. He is a super guy, and will be a great pick up.

Depends on your definition of "cheap." I can assure you this job came in at under 70K. Tribune is under a corporate mandate to push down salaries as it continues layoffs in several of its markets -- including today in Orlando.

Crimson Tide fans are just one of the many things I'll miss about the Alabama beat, which exceeded all of my expectations when I came here in Sept. 2010 to replace the great Gentry Estes. I will always be grateful to him for mapping out the beat so I could hit the ground running. I was the first person hired here with the shared arrangement between Mobile, Birmingham and Huntsville. I'll also tip my cap to Ian Rapoport, Don Kausler Jr., Tom Murphy and Paul Finebaum for offering valuable advice on how they had worked the beat, and coped with a relentless fanbase.

It's a tremendous job for anyone interested. You'll work alongside some very talented journalists with strong opinions, and tremendous skills. You'll answer to one of the best sports editors in Randy Kennedy, and work with one of the sharpest in Tom Arenberg.

You'll cover Nick Saban, which at times can feel like an out-of-body experience. There are ways to work around the extreme limited access if you use your mind. Stories are not simply limited to the interview room on campus.

I'm sure there will be a thread when the Alabama job is posted. I'm sure Randy wants to get someone in place ASAP with signing day out of the way, and spring practice just a few week away.

Tuscaloosa is a great college town. It's the perfect place if you're single and searching, or married with kids. It's less than an hour to Birmingham where there are plenty of great restaurants and good places to shop.

And it's only a few hours away from the country's most beautiful beaches.

Honestly, there's no reason I should have to sell any of you on this job. It's incredibly awarding on a daily basis.

I've been around forever and I can admit that I'm not always happy when a kid comes in, does a great job on one of the SEC beats and then bolts to cover the NFL.

Izzy is one of the nicest people you'll meet in this business and it's impossible not to be happy for his success.

I wish there were more just like him. Just a classy, classy guy.

Izzy is in fact very nice. But I think he's like 35, has at least two kids and has been in the business at like four jobs in four states. So it's not like he just fell off the turnip truck.

 

Interesting that the top post on Page 4 of this thread mentioned layoffs in Orlando today . . . and nobody seemed to notice.
