It falls into the "What the hell were you thinking?" category. It's incredibly short-sighted and stupid to think on any level this would have been a good idea. It was such a warm and fuzzy story when it happened and this idiocy turned him into a fame-seeking media whore in the span of a week. And it wasn't even his people who called it off. Oprah's team had to do that.

As has been pointed out, the best thing Sam could do right now is fire all of his representation.

Definitely this. The people he had at his disposal to advise him, from Mizzou, the NFL, former teammates, etc., were plentiful. He chose to blindly follow a couple of rookies who basically were working from the dining-room table in their apartment.

Bad luck that the guys he hitched his wagon to just happened to be all about cashing in on the gay angle and not the football angle? Maybe. Or maybe his choice of representation was completely in line with what he was looking for?

Why does he even need a representative and pr flack? The draft money is
slotted now anyway. He should have hired a personal trainer.
He could have hired an intern at Mizzou that would have had him
benching 225 lbs more than 17 times.

That's what I was getting at with this:

For any other seventh-rounder, I would agree, but I can understand how Sam would need a PR flak, all things considered.

Master P thinks these guys were in over their head.

Sounds more and more he got the wrong kind of agent. The right one would have seen the goal was making the NFL, not making a TV show. Unless the agents thought being drafted = on the team.

Can't say for sure, but this could be as close to the NFL as he gets. No lock to make the roster. If he gets cut and no one picks him up, or if he bounces around to 2-3 teams, his celebrity is significantly less.

Here's the double standard in all this: On one hand, someone says they just want to be treated like everyone else, given a fair shot based on their ability and that sexuality and personal matters shouldn't be an issue.

Then someone comes along and waves a few dollars at them, wanting to capitalize not on their football abilities or intellect, but on their sexuality and make them the star of a freak show and the whole attitude seems to change.

Can it ever be "Michael Sam, football player"? Or will it ALWAYS be: "Michael Sam, the gay football player"?

His handlers have turned him into "Michael Sam social engineer". Maybe
that's what he wanted in the first place.

Perhaps his handlers had their own agenda and have turned Sam
    into Ira Hayes.

At this point his best bet might be to go to Canada. Slower game
fits his speed and as a country might be more accepting of
    alternative lifestyle.

Double standard? The guy has been criticized plenty on this thread for his choices, including the show.

You keep going on about how disturbing it is that this story gets so much attention, but I don't see anybody around here commenting about it any more than you are. We all know why and that is why nothing you say about it can be taken seriously.

A lot of the people who were jumping up and down when he was drafted, turned on him just as quickly when the reality show story came out.

Sam has been criticized for a few different things, but this is probably the one thing where the criticism is justified.

A friend who covers the NFC West (who does not work for the St. Louis paper) said the St. Louis paper is discussing having a writer covering nothing but Sam for training camp and the season if he makes the team.

I said, "So the writer would be Michael Leahy to Sam's Michael Jordan..." and we got a good laugh about that.
