Michael Sam Reality Show

I think if it looks like Sam won't make the roster, he'll wind up on IR with some mystery injury, although that could blow up in their faces if Sam's not on board with it. Teams do that all the time if there is a player they like who might not be ready to make the active roster. I don't think the Rams will flat-out cut him unless he's just beyond awful, or if they tell him, we're cutting you, but we want you to be on the practice squad.

Yeah, I doubt it as well. I'd be stunned if he's on any other team this season. If the Rams cut him, he'll probably be on their practice squad or working the lecture circuit with Tebow.

A good majority of the social activists think because he was drafted, he's automatically made the team. As long as he's drawing a paycheck from the team - even a meager one on the practice squad - they won't care enough to make the connection that he had to clear waivers first. It's more about the social victory to them, whether you have to twist the truth or not.

This has been a very good discussion and I appreciate it. However, man, I'm so already tired of this guy.

Probably true. Social activists follow soccer.

If you had told me a month ago that we'd be tired of him a couple weeks after the draft, I'd have been surprised. He kept a very low-profile between the combine and the draft and I think that was a good move. I don't know if that was by design or if he was just too busy setting up the Oprah deal, which likely took a long time to complete.

I'm think a lot of people feel the way you do, and given the reality show debacle, I think it's warranted.

The best scenario for Sam would have been to go in the fifth or sixth round, show up to camp, make the team and we'd hear very little from him until after the season. Obviously, he's anything but a typical rookie, but if he had a typical rookie season, that probably would have been the best thing for him.

I'll be curious how much things change between now and training camp and if people aren't rolling their eyes when they hear his name in late July. I think the reality show did a lot of damage to his brand and cause and the only way to move past that would be to show up and overachieve at camp. Any other scenario and people are going to claim that the commissioner encouraged the Rams to draft him and that the only reason he's on a roster is because a team is worried about the PR backlash if he's cut. I have no idea if the commissioner encouraged the Rams to draft him or if the Rams care at all about the potential backlash of cutting him, but would it stun anyone if it was true.

I'm not saying he has to be dominant once camp opens, but the best way to make the criticism go away (to some extent) is to leave no doubt that he deserves to be on a NFL roster.

I'm not tired of this guy - I'm tired of this gay athlete narrative that has been force fed to us for at least two years now.

I'm hoping this guy makes it, is a star, wins every major award and becomes the greatest d-end ever, this way the people pushing this narrative will have nothing left to talk about.

If he fails, the next gay guy who comes along will get the same treatment.

Perhaps. But there's only one first. Maybe the first gay player who succeeds.

Don't you think that there has already been a gay player that has succeeded?

Rudy played how many downs in his "career" at Notre Dame? And, he's made a living off of it to this day.

Michael Sam needs to play one down in the NFL, and he'll make a living giving speeches, writing a book, and selling his movie rights.

Fuck, they just made a movie about two Indian baseball players that made it to AA.

You can't blame him for trying to monetize this. He'll make more money long term off the football field than he ever will on it.

I suppose that argument could be made, Boom.
