Anytime a rookie comes in and steals headlines --- and money --- it does not go over well with the veterans who figured they have paid their dues. When the subject is something outside of the sport itself, it gets even worse. Anyone remember a guy named Brian Bosworth from the 1980s, who was a media circus in his day?

With a reality film crew around the Rams will be operating on pin and needles for fear that they say something unwittingly that would be considered anti gay.

Again, Sam is now a pawn in the movement to make homosexuality mainstream.
He's the modern day Ira Hayes.

Sam said all the right things about wanting to be treated as a football player
but his actions clearly are not showing that.

Whitlock compared Sam to Tebow as someone who isn't worth the circus that comes with them.

sam's boyfriend better be a likable, down to earth ordinary guy, who is gay. Sam is pretty much known commodity, but his co-star is not. If this guy is anything like a stereotypical gay male (see the Jack character on Will & Grace) it will surely not end well. Spouses and significant others of pro athletes are not generally well received by the public. Vito is an athlete himself so it may ameliorate the concern some.

This has got to drive so many people absolutely insane that I'm hoping it turns out well. Between the Chris Broussards and the Rush Limbaughs, Mike and Vito are going to annoy all the right assholes.

Being the first non-faker/non-retender is huge.

This is typical criticism; people want to pretend that this was never an issue before (check that Incognito stuff) and skip right into gay player plays on team no big deal. Well history's not like that.

Btw, were you guys aware of this little tidbit about the boyfriend:

So now poor Fisher has to worry about waking up with a horse's head if he cuts Sam. What fun reality show entertainment.

So a player has a romantic relationship with the son of a mobster who served prison time for his involvement in a gambling ring.

    Huh.

That's just the sort of feel-good story Roger Goodell has been looking for!

Making me wonder if Sam just guaranteed he'll make the roster, with the Rams knowing full well that now he'll have a lot more control over the narrative of his rookie season than your everyday seventh-round flier. That guy gets cut, it's bundled into a weekday NFL notes package or relegated to transactions. Sam gets cut, not only is there a wave of drama at the point of transaction, but when the tearful season finale of Sam I Am or Grand Sam or whatever this thing is going to be called debuts, it'll trigger another round of yelling and debating.

I wonder if pro-Sam or anti-Sam will score more points on Around the Horn

Well, when Michael was first starting out, he was drafted by this NFL team. But as his play got worse and worse, his coach wanted to get out of it. But the commissioner wouldn't let them. Now, Michael is my father's son's boyfriend. So he went to see the coach and offered him $10,000 to keep Michael on the team, but the coach said no. So the next day, he went back, only this time with Luca Brasi. Within an hour, he not only had Michael on the team, he gave him a $3.5 million dollar bonus.
