We're less than 24 hours into this story, and it already feels old.

How many people are going to we writing about Michael Sam's sexuality the first week of October, when the story is 8 months old, and there's actual football news to report?

The laziest reporting ever. Here's what random people on Twitter said. The athletes tweeting congratulations is fine, but why would you include that other crap?

The crap is in the story to keep the narrative up of how Sam will be persecuted. Nobody knows what will happen until he is in a lockerroom but if Missouri is the precendent, he will be fine and rightfully so.

Regarding the "third to seventh round pick, maybe even undrafted" synopsis, the problem is that it seems to be just covering all bases for the sake of doing so.

To summarize scoutspeak about player draft projections:

Top 10 pick: Should quickly become an elite player.
First-round pick: Should become an elite player but it might take a season or two.
1-2: Should quickly become a good starter, but not necessarily elite.
2-3: Should become a good starter but it might take a season or two.
3-5: Has a chance to become a good starter but depends on development and coaching. Will be a depth player for at least a couple of seasons.
5-7: His best bet is to be a depth player. If he becomes a starter, consider yourself lucky.
Undrafted: Has a chance to become a depth player but is more likely to become training camp fodder.

Scouts never consider "undrafted" to become a starter. EVER.

Projecting Sam to be "3-5" is understandable. I can think of one undersized pass rusher in the NFL, Elvis Dumervil, and he was drafted in the fourth round. So it wouldn't be unusual if Sam was drafted in the fourth round.

But to describe him as "3-7" followed by one GM saying "I wouldn't draft him" is silly because you've made the range a bit too broad. You may as well apply that label to everybody who isn't at least graded "1-2."

Now, if players other than Sam are getting projected "3-7" then, by all means, show me.

I agree it can be a lazy tactic.
There is an honest intention, though, to capture how ugly our society can be.
And maybe to shame the spawn of Australopithecus that scribbled these things on "social" media.

Will current gay players let him go it alone or will there be some sort of organized coming out announcement to take the heat off the guy?
