Mike Reed Sets Goals for New Gannett

Exactly, Slacker. Seeing the sense of shock by some on social media is startling - it has always been trending in this direction, and it doesn't matter that 400 people were laid off a month (or whatever) ago.

The end is going to be an ugly one, and it is coming sooner rather than later. The time to search for a life boat and an escape plan was 5 years ago, maybe 10.

 

I had been asking about a buyout but it was almost Thanksgiving and it didn’t look like we were going to get one
I decided to retire and I was getting ready to tell my boss when the News Guild president walked by and started waving his hands
Buyouts were being offered, I was told
When the news became official I went back and told my boss but the ME told me not to say anything until they made the announcement
I kept my word but it was my last week and they hadn’t announced anything
Then the new schedule was posted and my name wasn’t on it
“Hey, looks like Jake’s taking the buyout.”
Still got a going away party on two days notice
So glad I’m out of the business

 

Remember that as wretched as Old Gannett was, they’ve already exited. This is the final days of GateHouse that we are watching now. Hate it for everybody involved.
