Looks like a bunch of the buyouts went into effect today - Seen at least two FB friends that took it.

Today was the last day of employment for those taking the buyout.

Former co-worker's last day ended 40 minutes ago. Tomorrow will be the most beautiful day of his life. His breakfast will taste better than any meal you and I have ever tasted.

I took a buyout from my newspaper several years ago. My last day of working was the day before Thanksgiving. That damn turkey was the best-tasting turkey I've ever had.

Eh, it beats a byline strike.

What they should do in addition to any one-day strikes are some quiet strikes, similar to quiet quitting, except go into work, just sit around, do nothing, get paid, go home. They also should turn ever dumb proposed Gannett initiative into something negotiable or flat-out refuse to implement it.

You will then be fired and they will hire one of the eleventy billion Big State U grads who need jobs.

I’m not advocating for labor to bend over and take it. I just think wasting everyone’s time with a very symbolic action that won’t move the needle at all is… well, a waste of time.

If the NewsGuild is serious, it will hit up every “design studio” facility and organize, organize, organize until they get enough support for a vote. Those are the people who make the magic happen at this point. Close down Austin for a day and Gannetthouse is SOL re: a print product (not that it matters as much anymore, I guess). Do newsrooms, where they still exist, have access to design software that’s not a 20-year-old version of Quark?

Gannett, in their conference all, said they would start to outsource more tasks. I think the ex-McClatchy chain has moved design overseas. I would guess Gannett is considering the same.

It is against federal law to fire someone for engaging in a labor action.

In all earnestness would quiet quitting be protected as a labor action or be seen as laying down on the job? Probably depends which party happens to be running the Labor Dept
