Mort giving Silver credit so when the Tomlin story proves wrong and Grimm gets the job, Mort's got his ass covered.

Except Mort also said his sources were saying the same thing about Tomlin.

A classic example of shotgun journalism.

Liked this tidbit from Peter King's column today.

Age when Chuck Noll took the Steelers job in 1969: 37.

Age when Bill Cowher took the Steelers job in 1992: 34.

Age when Mike Tomlin takes the Steeler job in 2007: 34.

In retrospect, it doesn't surprise me that the Rooneys and the Steelers went with the wild card pick and not with the obvious candidate. That's par for the course in the organization, and not necessarily a bad thing.

I actually also gotta say I got the rumor it would be Tomlin from a fairly reliable source before SI broke the story. If I had a job at a paper right now...
Maybe Bouchette did know it first, but didn't feel his sources were strong enough.

The bottom line here is that Mike Silver's original story was right on, and Mort and the Tribune embarrassed themselves by rushing to report that his story was wrong. I'd say the Tribune looks worse, because the story was in their backyard and at least Mort didn't report that the Steelers were hiring Grimm. ESPN and the Tribune look a lot more incompetent today than they would have if they had just accepted the fact that they got beat in the first place.
