Just out of curiosity, what answer could the other contestant given on bailouts and the economy that would have created a politically charged uproar?

That she disagrees with Obama and says bailouts are running the country into the ground? Or that everyone deserves handouts?

Point is, whether it's bailouts or gay marriage, those are relevant issues right now. And there's no way the contestant could spin that into a "world peace" answer -- they would actually have to show some smarts.

When they write about "Why America Failed," one can only hope a smart author will write about this as a turning point.

I'd be willing to bet, though, that if Queen Bee-yotch did mark her down, another judge on the panel, perhaps of a more conservative bent, marked her up.
Wouldn't have been Claudia Jordan, though. She was on HLN last night, and admitted she's an SSM supporter (which means Rhode Island's GOP governor and Democratic legislative leaders will probably try to retoractively strip her of her '90s Miss RI sash). She felt Miss Cali relied on "I was brought up to believe" as a crutch instead of speaking on her own, and wasn't impressed with the answer.
I think Miss Cali believed she was giving the politically correct answer, since save for the occasional gay dress designers and celebrity judges, the pageant world seems like a pretty conservative place. If the state or local organizers found a contestant who supported SSM, they'd probably try to DQ her on the spot.

Damn. This was my big chance. If only I had been a Miss USA contestant.

"Get government out of the marriage business, Mr. Hilton."

    Hi, Pastor!

I still say the ultimate beauty pageant question is: Could a Jedi Lightsabre cut through Superman?

First it was Christmas. You weren't happy with just stealing a winter solstice holiday from the pagans. Next came Easter. You weren’t happy about Estera, the fertility god, so you took that away. Can’t you just leave the pagans with one thing?

    ;D

I understand that the world hunger question is pretty easy to answer, but doing something about hunger and poverty is more important than gay marriage. Gay marriage is not *the* issue of our time, or any time. As a civil rights issue, it's not sweeping the nation. As much people around here use the "it's a business contract" and "we want insurance benefits and tax breaks" argument, you can't suddenly turn around and pretend an extra wad of cash in the pockets of one of the wealthiest demographics in America is somehow more pressing than feeding the starved around the globe.
