I've ragged on ULL a couple of times on this thread, but Lafayette itself isn't a bad little city, especially if you like to eat well.

Prejean's is as good a restaurant as you'll find anywhere and Mulate's is right up the road at Breaux Bridge for a fairly authentic Cajun dining/drinking experience. I've found the people to be quite friendly and it's a pretty easy town to get around in.

It's a different part of the world, though, without a doubt. I vividly recall not too long after my folks moved to Houston and we started make regular trips up and down I-10, we stopped for gas at Henderson (about 10 miles from Lafayette toward BR), and when I went in to pay, there were two old fellows behind the counter chattering away in French. Definitely not white-bread America.

Why is it all the crazy, irrational fan bases of college sports are in the south?

    Or, it used to be.

The only location of Mulate's is in New Orleans, LA. We are sorry to report that, after 31 years in business, the Mulate's in Breaux Bridge, LA has closed.

Always loved going there. Was sorry to hear it closed.

I have always tended to dismiss the significance of "equity" in a job setting if you really step into some deep shit.

A federal government friend of mind, whose boss was once a heartbeat - and a few hundred votes - from the presidency, put it thusly: "One thousand 'attaboys' are erased by one 'Oh shit.' "

But, I still wonder if Matthew might have weathered the storm in Columbus if he'd been viewed differently, especially inside his own organization. I wouldn't go so far as to say he made it easy for them to fire him, but he did not make it difficult to fire him based on perception before the event, and that's a subtle difference that might have been crucial.

So what was the final score of the baseball game?

Lafayette is one of the must unique places in the country and the food is outstanding. Sure, the people are hard to understand if you aren't from there, but that makes it kind of cool.

Really dumb. If there is one sure way to bring a shitstorm on yourself, it's to attack a whole region.

This isn't a fanbase issue. You just can't make a sweeping statement like that about a group of people. I know a lot of columnists like to write the easy column making fun of the city that the local team is playing, it's taking things a step further when you say the things that the writer and the radio host said about Cajuns.

We've all covered events in cities we wouldn't want to go back to. I think you can write or say that Lafayette is "the worst place in the world" and while that's an idiotic statement, I think he would have been OK if he hadn't started talking about the people.

    Right.

Kornheiser famously trashed Jacksonville the week it hosted the Super Bowl. But he never said the people were sub-human.

There was a long list of columnists who trashed Jacksonville when it hosted the Super Bowl.

You don't say? That's what the last 2 1/2 pages have been about.
