Surprised that Denny Crane did not make the list.

Don Fehr looks like he's going to enjoy this.

    What a joke.

Two All-Stars from last year, and one of them is Bonds.

No wonder baseball wants to forget the past. So little of its present & future is mentioned.

I was going to wait for someone else to mention it, but I was surprised that your real name was in there too. And not even when it came to Clemens.

poinD and bw are both right, of course, in the hypothetical.

In reality, baseball did nothing to help itself. If Selig had mounted even a half-hearted public call to clean up the game at any point prior to say, 2004, he'd have some moral authority today. Sadly he has none. He pissed it away by saying and doing nothing - no matter the pragmatism of his reasoning or the pressure brought to bear on him by the interest groups within the game. Which is why he's taking the raspberry from almost everyone here.

Is that unfair to Selig? Maybe.

There is plenty of blame to go around. Many knew that something was not right.

Gotta love the MLBPA ballplayer bashing Don in the head with that bat.

True as that is - and we've heard it many times today - the Commissioner is the Commissioner. He's the one person in all this who's got the power to move between the various groups - owners, players, fans - and negotiate the future of the game.

That DyePack hasn't found a way to post on this thread is the upset of the day.

Re: Running Mitchell Report Thread (Selig: I plan to read it over X-mas break!)

Exactly. That's why anyone who wants to spend all of their time pouncing on Bud for being inept should look closely to how he got to be commissioner. Vincent was pushed out by the owners and the players union because he wasn't going to side with them, but act independently to what is in the best interest of the game.

Bart Giamatti would have continued that legacy if not for his untimely death. Bud is commish until 2009, so asking for his head is useless, unless the owners push him out.

It would wise for MLB, as an entity, to start looking for someone who can say "fuck you" to both sides and foster compromise.

Bud has been the brunt of everyone's wrath. But, the owners and the players haven't been much help to him anyway, given their own agendas. Bobby Petrino would have quit this job in five minutes. Bud didn't want to appease the owners if he broke ranks with them, and since he was an owner, the players union wasn't going to talk to the enemy. That's why he's such a goof and an easy target.

Don't expect the owners or the players to offer comment. They'll try to continue doing whatever they want, because the commish's office means little to them since 1994.

Elliotte, welcome to the world of American sports and the business of sports!
