Locking the barn door after the . . .

    Oh, the barn still isn't locked? . . .

Would you buy a used car from that man?

    Aren't home runs great?

I'm the first to say that the commissioner's office, the owners, GMs, etc. turned their heads for years. But at this point, it is a no win situation. As people have pointed out, the cow is out of the barn. Some people will criticize anything they do. They didn't have to bloody themselves and make the game look even worse by releasing the Mitchell Report. It took backbone to do that. Many people criticized them for not letting sleeping dogs lie. But they released it, gave some acknowledgement to what happened throughout the 90s and early 00s for the first time--as imperfect and necessarily incomplete as the report was--saw a bunch of players hauled before Congress including the public embarrassment of Roger Clemens and Brian McNamee, and after all that--which was the result of baseball actually facing the music for once--the criticism is that you want something resembling a fucking backbone? You don't want a backbone. You want the game to blow itself up.

did mlb enlist you to become its resident apologist?

hopefully you'll become a cop and pull me over one day.

Definitely not an apologist for anyone. If drugs are something anyone cared about, they would turn the testing program over to an independent entity. Even so, nothing is going to make much difference at this point. Drugs have been a part of the game for 15 to 20 years or more and anything they do is the equivalent of trying to stop a tidal wave. There is no turning back the clock, so at this point all the outrage is wasted energy.

What exactly should be done, though? I'm not saying I agree with how this is being handled and I definitely don't understand the lifting of the suspensions, but what is the alternative?

    A. no, the player's union won't allow that to happen. has nothing to do with who cares and who doesn't.
    B. "... nothing is going to make much difference at this point ... anything they do is the equivalent of trying to stop a tidal wave." yeah, you're no fucking apologist.
    C. "There is no turning back the clock, so at this point all the outrage is wasted energy." see B.

    That makes no sense.

"Anyone" includes the players, as well as the owners.

And what I typed makes me a realist, not an apologist.

Ragu, there are some people who won't be happy until baseball implodes. This, in all honesty, is the best solution to the whole mess. Move on, and take care of those that cheat from here.

God forbid if baseball ever did shut down for an extended period of time. The resulting aftershocks would be catastrophic.
