More home runs would would help if he is going to be considered a fantastic player. Maybe part of it is that he was so hyped and was also a very good football player. But unless he has a resurgence he is looking closer to a Jorge Posada than a Mike Piazza, especially when you consider Mauer's one season is way better than the others. I throw out those names because Piazza is probably the best offensive catcher ever. I read more than a few people saying Mauer could be as good. At the top of his game, Maurer was better defensively, but he doesn't seem to be at the top of his game anymore.

On the 25-year anniversary of the Earthquake Series ... the Giants have a .667 winning percentage, and the A's are the only other major league team above .600 AND have scored the most runs in the majors and allowed the fewest. (Has that ever happened for a season?)

This time it would be Oakland's stadium being declared unplayable, on account of massive liquid shit flowing through the clubhouses and dugouts.

Mauer has never been a home run hitter. He had the one MVP season with 28, which is an obvious outlier. He's never hit more than 13 in any other seasons, and he's been around long enough now that it's obvious that's what he is and what he'll always be.
Hell, if you look at his 2009 splits, he had one big month -- May -- when he hit 11 of those 28 homers. That's an obvious glitch in his swing when he was doing something outside the norm.

The A's scoring so many runs is the surprising part to me. Brandon Moss and Josh Donaldson are crushing the ball thus far.

Derek Norris is having what will probably be the big year of his career, too.

There's no reason power shouldn't be part of the guy's hit tool. He's 6-5, 240 with a long stroke.

I think Manny probably gets 6 or 7 games for the bat toss.

Not the same player emotionally or physically since the knee injury he suffered late last year. And that knee -- and the idea that his knee was being targeted -- had a lot to do with the whole Oakland mess.

The A's are set for the next three seasons. The only players of real impact not under their control next year are Alberto Callaspo and Jed Lowrie. While that's the whole left side of their infield, they'll let those two walk and plop more kids down in their place. Then in 2016 they'll have to make decisions on Yoenis Cespedes (a disappointment after a great debut), Scott Kazmir and Daric Barton.

I know it's not a fair comparison because Andy Allanson was just a bad overall hitter, but I remember watching him and saying 'The guy should be able to crush the ball.' Looking at Mauer and also considering he's a good athlete I think the same. Kind of like watching Chris Young pitch and thinking he should be more like JR Richard and less like Bob Tewksbury.

Yeah, good point. The dude I think of for that would be Kyle Blanks.
Brian Downing is listed on B-REF at 5-10, 170. What a joke- that guy was chiseled like a statue.

What would Pete Rose in his prime make today? What should he make?

    What about Wade Boggs?

Rose averaged roughly 3.5 WAR per season.
Translates to $~15 million, give or take.
    But it's apples to oranges.
