Was going to say Jeter, at the risk of turning into a Manky clone. They only won one World Series during that contract, but it's impossible to say he underperformed during it. Even during this last contract, he hasn't been god-awful when he's been on the field. I also have no problem with a team overpaying a bit for a guy like Jeter. He's one of those rare few who mean so much to a franchise and a fanbase that the team should do everything within reason to make sure he finishes his career with them.

Nothing happening in Kansas City through six.

Indians' Kluber loses it with one out in seventh. Carry on.

So if both of them blow an ACL tomorrow and never play again, their contracts were worth it?

Well Trout at least has been one of the best players in the game. Simmons is not even one of the best shortstops, maybe top 10.

Adrian Beltre's 6 for $96M was pretty big at the end of 2010 but looks like a bargain now.

I thought he was talking about the $1,970,000 that Ted Simmons stole earned from the Braves at the end of his career.

No indication that it's anywhere close to happening, but the Mets and Rockies are apparently at least discussing a trade that would send Troy Tulowitzki or Carlos Gonzalez --- or both --- to New York for a boatload of young pitching prospects.

Tulo and CarGo are freaking studs. When they're healthy. Which isn't all that often.

Which is why neither is a good investment. It's not like either is going to somehow become more durable as they age.

    Years/money owed after this season:

Tulo: 6 years/$118 million (has a $4 million buyout on 2021 player option, which is for $15 million)

    CarGo: 3 years/$53 million

    That's a lot of cheddar.

Tulowitzki will be 35 by the final year of that contract. Given his injury history, will he even be playing shortstop by then? He's a heck of a hitter at any position, but he certainly loses some value once he is no longer doing it while providing outstanding defense at short.
