Everyone's put on waivers. Everyone good is claimed. If he were going to be dealt, he'd have almost certainly been dealt a week ago.

People freak out about this every damn year.
Hundreds of players not named Mike Trout or Clay Kershaw will be slipped through waivers this month.

I won't say there's zero chance he'll be traded. But it's about 1%, and no one is "surprised" that he's claimed.

It's simply good business for the Phillies to put all these bad, dead-money contracts on the curbside.
Someone will want to root through the bin.
    Maybe not Howard, though.

Well, Hamels isn't a bad contract. He's still a very good pitcher. Which is why he's the one getting claimed.

    Hamels has a partial no-trade.

No doubt that's plausible, but again, Cutch didn't complain Saturday and he played until that swing in the eighth on Sunday. I think your scenario entails the doctors missing the injury on X-Rays or MRI, McCutchen not complaining of any pain for 17 innings, then the doctors realizing their mistake and willfully lying about it even though there's no real reason to do so since McCutchen did not complain.

I think the more likely scenario is the simpler one, which is that it was an awkward swing that caused an injury. Agree to disagree.

Byrd was claimed as well because he can be useful and his contract isn't that much of a burden. I believe he is set to make $8 million in 2015.

I'm surprised no contenders made a move for him before the non-waiver deadline. He's having a hell of a season.

He had one last year, too. Not sure how long it will last at his age, but the guy has been at this level for a while now.

Nothing happening for the home team in Anaheim through five.
