It seems like the Giants are going for one no-hitter a week.

And the Angels use eight pitchers for the first time in a nine-inning game -- and win, with the Next One going 0-for-4 ... and the closer going four games in a row ... and that's a four-game lead ... and the first team guaranteed without a losing record. Quietly optimistic. It's all about how you're playing a month from now. Not now.

Still ... Light That Baby Up.

Conversely, Samardzija pitched an eight-inning complete game four-hitter. One earned run and one unearned run that he wild pitched in. Angels shutout the A's the second game in a row.

The A's offense died when they traded Cespedes. Through the end of July they averaged five runs a game. In August it was 3.64.

Obviously the guy himself wasn't producing a run and a half a game, and they've had some injuries, but there is no threat in the middle of that order anymore.

A's get Adam Dunn. That'll solve everything.

I've laughed about the guy plenty over the years. But I'll tell you what: All it would take would be for him to get hot for a week or two, and he could carry a team. Still.

If he doesn't, you sit him and you're out cash and a middling prospect.

It's too late for help anyway. Angels lead 3-0 with bases loaded and one out in the second, Kazmir yanked, four-game sweep about to leave A's five back in the division.

If this nosedive goes on much longer for the A's, they may need to worry about making the wild card game.

Chris Carter has 53 doubles, triples, homers and 43 singles.

    Explains the .226.

True, but I'd say they would have greatly preferred avoiding a do-or-die game against the team and pitcher that have been their kryptonite for the past two years.

Brewers acquire Jonathan Broxton for the eighth-inning role. Problem is they're usually down by 10 or so in the eighth inning nowadays.
